Well, I had Nandi "assessed" and the trainer had some good things to say about him and my repoire with him in the ring. They said "nice deep bite and stable temperament" He went nuts when the trainer brought out the jute tuggy thingey. A couple of teases with that thing and he just wanted it so bad!!! When he did a good bite she let go and he pranced around like he just killed the beast for dinner. Damn proud of himself he was. He had a blast.
Down side is that I have received many rolled eyes and deep concerns about expressing interest in Sch from my friend and GSD trainer.
We got the same thing when we decided to do schutzhund with our rotties. I just ignored them.
We do quite a few different activities with our rotties such as schutzhund, AKC obedience, rally, agility & herding. People are usually shocked when they find out we do schutzhund with our dogs. I love taking my dogs to different venues and letting people meet them to see for themselves that schutzhund does not create an out of control aggressive dog like some people seem to think.
I have even had a few people change their minds about schutzhund after meeting my dogs.
I also plan on using him to visit nursing homes, hospitals like I do with my other GSD.
If this is an important goal, you may want to be sure that activities in schutzhund do NOT restrict you from doing this.
Because of the perception of schtuzhund by many in the general public, often times OTHER activites are excluded to dogs trained in bitework, regardless of the arguments that can be made about such a dog actually being safer.
I am NOT defending the assessment, just saying that it is a reality to consider.
If you are wanting to get your dog certified to do therapy work, you will need to do it thru TDI (Therapy Dogs International). The Delta Society is another therapy organization, but they do not allow any dogs that have done bite work.
If your dog is certified thru TDI, the fact that you do schutzhund shouldn't matter.
Thanks for that info. I was aware that Delta won't certify, but I wasn't aware that TDI would. But that is a whole other topic that gets me......goin'

I'm sorry, I know it's o/t but am I the only one who got a chuckle from "jute tuggy thingey?" Perhaps I am just overtired and caffeine-challenged...

Now now, Jeff...it takes time to convert the known universe. Patience is a virtue, O wise Ringaholic
Just an update...I had my first "lesson" in this sport on Saturday. Going back to basics on building drive and learning how to play with Nandi to bring out the drive. It was also Nandi's first time with a Helper. Not knowing what exactly to expect with Nandi in his pulling harness and a line and that jute tuggy thingey, he did very well according to others watching. I was trying not to fall!!! The helper brought out a sleeve made of jute (?) and Nandi was very eager to get it!!! I think I have been transformed by this sport and yet, I know so very little. I watched others with their dogs as they worked on learning something new or polishing a skill when I realized the challenging task ahead of me in this sport. Wow! I thought these dogs and handlers have problems in areas where I don't even have areas!!! Thank you for the guidance!
