Go to the top right of this page and press on Leerburg table of contents. Then on the left of that page is where you can find training articles and videos. I would ask Ed to recommend a couple to start off with.I am sure he has a tape on basic training. This is a good one to start off with because it gives the two of you a common language. That in itself is a good confidence builder. There might be another, but I am tired.

Is this sight only for owners of the protective breeds or are collie owners welcome?.....Do you think the obedience video would be helpful for me? We are making progress but it is very slow. I have no intention of giving up on him.
If I were you I would order it today, and watch the whole thing. Like others, I found that it deserved studying -- not just one run-through. It will give you so much new knowledge and understanding.
There are many breeds represented by their owners on this forum, BTW, and the forum includes people who want (or have) just well-trained pets. You'd be amazed at how much knowledge we general obedience/agility/etc. people can soak up on a forum like this one.
After reading many of the topics it seems most are into protection dogs. I don't want a protection dog. I just want a companion and pet. I would like him to bark to let me know when someone is around.
Wauneta, I am not interested in training my GSD for protection, but I find this site an invaluable resource for my training needs. I have purchased many of the videos offered from Leerburg and recommend you do the same. Also, continue to ask questions on the web board, I have found that there really isnt a dumb question and a lot of helpful answers. Good luck with Radar.
I have just ordered the OB video. I am optimistic. Hopefully the video will give me enough information to make the right decision on using a prong collar on Radar. Wish us luck. I want to make the right decision for him.
I personally think you are focusing too much on what collar to use on the dog. In reality, you want the dog to gain confidence and bond with you and the family. It sounds like he has never bonded with a human and doesn't know they can be trusted.
I would definately order the obedience video, but I would also consider reading up on the building drive and focus articles as well as the pack behavior stuff.
You need to set the pack order as this kind of dog will, normally, feel more comfortable and confident right away. Give the dog his own space with a kennel, do the obedience work, use markers.
This dog should also have decent drive once you help him find it, which will build confidence.
You want to use the right tools for your dog, but you also want to have the right structure to support those tools.

Thanks for replying. I agree with the above. I don't think he has ever bonded with a human. I believe his bond has always been with other canines.
I have ordered the Basic Obedience cd. My concern with the collar is so much inference was placed on it in the add. The fact that the cd addresses the soft dog and his corrections has relieved my concerns.
I had ordered a training program from another trainer. He also was using a prong. I had emailed them and asked if it should be used for a dog like Radar. They replied but totally ignored my question.
We are making progress although slow. I just don't want to make a mistake that would send us backwards. That is why I wanted an answer about the collar. I didn't have the answer that is why I wanted it from some one that did. It sounds as if this question is answered in the cd. I have ordered the cd and can't wait to watch and apply it.
