My problem is with all the bones and "goodies" stored at pets' eye/mouth level. I'm trying to proof my pups while all the other dogs are chomping away - at things my pups can't have but would love to try. Never mind the chaos at the treat bins.

makes a great training setup for service dog,though-even better than in a market! SDs are trained to not even look in the direction of food, etc, never mind sniff/mouth anything.
seriously,i really wonder if those stores don't do that deliberatly...dysplay those things like that, counting on the old 'you break it,you've bought it' rule...

...if i had the choice,so would i. but Anja has to go where i go,or i don't get to go at all...
but i don't take pets in there,at least not on the floor. we do need to take our MinPin there for a new harness,so i can be sure it fits right, but no way is she going on the floor! she is too much of a pepperpot herself, and i don't want her exposed to all the germs and junk that our SDs are used to. i don't trust anyone to bring their dog around her,and i don't want her to try to play with one and get bitten...that would hurt me worse than her,she means so much to me.

The majority of the blame in this case is with the mother. Why did she allow he daughter to go up and pet a strange animal?
Nice job of stupid parenting, as usual.
But of course she'll sue and get a boat-load of cash and her own stupid and irresponsibile behavior will never come into question.

Oh, and of course the stupid mother wants a *law* now in place, rather then let people exercise common sense and responsibilty.....which she didn't.
I feel bad for the little girl, but that scar will be less of a problem for her in life than having a parent like that mother.

Exactly, Will. The "one bad apple" syndrome. A dog may be put down, perhaps needlessly, and for those who enjoy Petco, Pet Supply, etc., the possibility that a NO PETS ALLOWED sign is on the front door.

Perhaps that's better anyway. Alot of people will be mad... but service animals will be allowed into the stores because they're always allowed anyway, n it'll keep the idiots dogs out.

I'd guess a common ground would be to post expectations for people walking in their dogs...fixed leads, dog within a few feet of the owner at all times, no children controlling dogs, encourage use of real training collars (which by the way you can pick up on aisle X)...that kind of stuff. Doesn't seem too much of a stretch to me.
