Will has a valid point. Unfortunately the majority of people have no clue what the difference is between a true working GSD and all the rest. I just hope the puppy mills dont work overtime to produce crapple and ultimately rain on the GSD's parade. Politics blow!

The puppy mills will have some stiff competion from all the other piece'o-s--t poor breeders out there. I took a walk on the wild side (web), and couldn't decide who's worse, bad breeders, or the stupid people who don't research the breed. (in the end it's the poor dogs who get screwed). There are "panda shepherds, blue/red shepherds, huge monster plush coats, lions & tigers & bears, OH MY
NYPD was first on scene w/ GSD's and then worked the rubble for remains for months.
Once FEMA got on board other breeds arrived and the NYPD guys were moved out since they had "police dogs" not disaster search dogs. Once FEMA left they were back at it.
this is info is from a direct communication w/ several handlers I had the priveledge of working with in a seminar situation.

...hmmm...i don't know about that. i've been collecting any and all pics of 9/11 dogs for years, and have them in one of my Webshots albums as a tribute to them, and i would say that there are at least as many Labs as GSDs that were on the job, from what i've seen so far. the way it looks to have been mostly GSDs and Labs on the job there, with Goldens and Dobies coming in second and third....
...so sue me...i get nervous about anything that tries to popularise my breed...the GSD is in bad enough shape in this country,we don't need more BYBs breeding the 'NYS dog'.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
The way I look at it is this. It is just fine for them to promote the GSD. The working line GSD is a minority in Germany as well as here and the true working enthusiasts mostly are those of us that started by getting a dog they thought would do the work only to find that it is a small subset of dedicated handlers and working breeders that are holding onto the ideal all the show folks use to sell their animals. So a popular breed will produce the handlful of us that bitch about the false claims that many make and continue to hold out against them just because of the BS we bought into originally. The show dogs will swell the small ranks of working folks just because of what they are not.

I feel you on that one brudda!
BUT, most people know squat about GSDs. . .so it's still good to promote this very positive public image.
People see aggressive GSDs doing bite work, and they think "Police Dogs", which is positive. . .not "kid killers", which is what a lot of America sees when they look at other aggressive dogs.
I'll take this little bit of positive press, even with the AKC's spin on it, any day of the week.
