"Wierdo dog..."
Yeah, well, that describes pretty much every single Malinois on the planet. They're ALL wierd to me. And that's coming from a border collie person.
I have had one of these harnesses (one on the Bouv) for about five years. The woman who made them used to use the business name of "Wizard of Paws." I also have a leather one from Ed. For my dogs, the webbing one seemed to work better. They hold up fantastic as well. Here are a couple pics take just a few days ago of mine on my new puppy:
closed cell foam with a covering of ripstop nylon or neoprene is a better choice for padding. The fake fur padding doesn't give as much cushioning or spread the force out as well as more resilient padding does. Neoprene is the nicest and doesn't pick up burrs and crud like fake fur. Just my 2 Canadian cents. As someone who has sewn alot of harnesses that fake fur is a PITA to cut and makes a mess and I was really glad when they moved on to better paddings!
I completely agree that neoprene is much better! When I used to competively weight pull, I gave up on getting a neoprene padding and ended up covering the padding with copper pipe insulation. Never thought about replacing the fake fur with neoprene. That is a good idea!
jeff--
living in CO it shouldn't be hard to find a GOOD saddlemaker to either fix your harness or custom-make one for ya. after all, the good ones custom-make saddles for horses of every size/shape.
that's the first place i'd go looking, anyway
I have the leerburg agitation harness that Will pointed out. I have a 60 lb female that pulls like a freight train & it holds her confortably & also an 80 lb male that I use it on. It is a couple of years old & looks like new. And belived me when I tell ya that my female has put it to the test!!! I also have the 2 in agitation collar but have found that my female pulls too hard to use the collar. I like the harness the best for a hard pulling dog. I have not had the problem that Jeff said he has with breathing in using the harness. The collar with my female causes a breathing issue though.
I don't think it is a quality issue, as much it is a weird dog shape issue. The leerburg harness that my club member has is perfect on both of her dogs. I have the leerburg tracking harness, and it has held up really well. I do not take good care of it, and it is still perfect. The aggitation harness is the same high quality, I would always recommend these highly. I just have a super weird shaped dog.
As far as having something made, I am so frustrated as to why it rides up, I wouldn't know what to ask for.
