When you offer your dog a steak, it will start to salivate -- if you ring a bell everytime you offer your dog a steak, it will subconsciously associate the bell ringing with eating steak -- then if you just ring the bell when there's no steak around, the dog will automatically salivate anyway, just from hearing the bell ringing -- That's the history of Pavlov's Dog...
Teach your Relief Command exactly the same way:
Take Pup out 1st thing in the morning for an onlead pit-stop -- watch Pup like a hawk & when you see he's just about to pee, tell him to "Get Busy" and then mark the behavior with "YES Busy!" while he's peeing -- Pup will begin to subconsciously associate that Relief Command with the act of peeing -- repeat the whole process when you see he's just about to poop (use the same term for pooping as you do for peeing) -- do this everytime you take Pup out for a pit-stop (always onlead) and he will get the picture PDQ <:-)

I tell my dog to stay when I want to leave the room without him following me, people always give me a weird look or ask me why I'm telling him to stay when he's just laying there... I think back in the days when shepherds were used for herding sheep his ancestor may have been bred to one, he certainly follows me around like one.

Bob, As we already know the glasses won't be a problem. But, you will have to turn those hearing aids off!!!
The funny thing about this story is that I was out in the yard with my dog and Will was up on his deck(about 6ft high). He likes to think he looks like one of the Beach Boys.....in reality, he looks like Pavaroti minus the proper attire(he had on loose shorts and a t-shirt). Had one hand across his chest and the other in the air with a look of total self-satisfation on his face.....Winnie just looked at him. I have to say it was one of the highlights of my visit!

Call me impatient, but....I take the pooch with me when I take a break (in the woods of course) and do my thing. He follows right along and gets the "take a break" command when he pees in unison with me. Took only about a week. Thank god I work at night otherwise some citizen would have me charged with bestaility or some stupid stuff like that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
