The most ancient vet guide I have says it's electric lights.
If their indoors and always have long days they shed always.
So I guess they shed year round in the South anyhow, and
other than Spring not so much if outside dogs up North.

have any of you guys trained your dog to be vacuumed? i mean the dog, not house/furniture/self. i swear i'm gonna try it w/my pup. i figure if a person can train horses/cattle to tolerate high-powered blow dryers, why not a dog to a vacuum?
the only problem being, that in between vacuumings, the dog IS shedding all over the house.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
plus the hair doesn't seem to conducive to vacumming directly off the dog--it sticks to 'em for some reason....

Ann, I used to vaccum my first dog I had as an adult, she didn't seem to mind it....or that's what I thought anyway. I had this attachment that was made for that purpose....it worked pretty good....I don't remember that the name of it was or where I got it. I also, used a piece of panty hose rubber banded around the hose, so her skin would not get sucked in. I was on the yearly vaccum replacement plan, the hair kills those things. She did not really tolerate that Rainbow thing I had....but the lower suction things she did ok with....I would not even think about using a shop vac! She still shed....daily.....but the vaccum was made life really easy. I tired it with my other dogs....they didn't see the humor in this at all....they run when the closet door opens! In fact, they don't see the humor in the force air dryer either (they probably don't see the humor in me either.) It's worth a try...it was a real easy quick fix....the results lasted as long as a good brushing! Deb

I guess I am too much of a horse person. I brush and vaccuum horses and do the dogs as well. i have found that regular brushing, good diet, that my GSD's and other breeds as well generally blow coat twice a year but otherwise we have minimal shedding. I use a small amount of a vitamin supplement ( about half of the recommended amount) I feed a mix of kibble and raw.I have not had much ofa shedding prblem and when i say brush daily i am talking about a 1-2 minute a day brushing and then a monthly vaccuum and bi-monthly bathe..

out of curiosity. what kibble/raw mix do you use? i'm thinking about going to the BARF diet; the guy i'm getting my pup from uses a kibble/raw diet also, and in the business i'm in, i oughta get a deal on RMB's...i'm thinking it'd be good for my 2 older dogs too...
and, what vit supplement do you use? i think one can't escape the 2x/yr coat blowing, but i sure don't mind minimizing it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />..

Just a quick note: Many canine nutritionists say that kibble and raw should be fed at different meals if you're feeding both. Kibble takes so much longer to go through that it can increase the length of time the raw is in the system, thereby losing some of the protection (from salmonella, e.Coli, etc., that affect us and not dogs) that the dog has naturally from his short and fast system.
P.S. Raw and The Honest Kitchen is a different story. It's meant to be supplemented with RMBs, if desired.

will--COME ON!!!
where you live, "blowing a coat" is like, well, OMG, "HE'S SHEDDING A LITTLE"!!! why not move North so you can REALLY experience it??
if Mr. Fetz can't tolerate a little vacuum "proofing" on the "platz", what's the big deal about him anyway? his pearly whites?
just kidding <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> lol

C'mon now, if my old Persian cat could handle having her tail sucked up in the Dustbuster, any dog should be able to deal with it!
