I was training with Tim Cruiser one fine summer day, and I tried to crack the whip. When I did get it to go, after a bunch of tries it made me jump. Like I need help to look like a tard!
Cindy, that was 16 years ago and many trainers were using the whip back then.
I don't think that any of the high scoring trainers use it any more as there are better ways ( as you well know, I've watched you train with those better prey items at the seminars! )
I agree with the whips effectiveness being dog specific. I’ve seen a broad spectrum of reaction. Whips drive my dog into overload…. Too much and I spend the next three months getting him to out again.
Oh, and for the record, since some people have commented on it - the whip is cracked with a flip of the wrist.
The trick is using your wrist, not the rest of your arm - it takes practice, but once you get it down, you're good to go!
Thanks Will, that was what I was looking for. Everyone in the club was like "oh its just a feel for it...."
I'm going to give a go at it again. The last time I spent maybe an hour trying to crack it and for two days after I had this soreness right under the elbow. Perhaps that is the problem. I know someone I talked to mentioned trying a horse whip ? or something with a longer tail thingy at the end. Any comments on this?
The portion that's at the end of the whip is replacable and commonly called a "popper".
If you're feeling elbow pain after using a whip, you're using your elbow too much - again, it's a "snap" with the wrist.
I don't think that using a horse whip would improve your form, just practice that "wrist flick" with the SchH whip.
A good DominMatrix could coach you in whip work ( Jeff likely knows some, free feel to PM him.......JUST KIDDING!! )
Sadly, with my upbringing the idea of someone other than Mom or Dad trying to apply punishment will go very badly for them. Back in the old bartender days this came up, and was immediatly denied.
