Here is a link to the "Wild Wolves" program from the PBS Nova series. It addresses why wolves howl and has a few examples you can play over your speakers. The howls include
cool thanks!
First Saturday of the month, when the tornado horns are tested, every large dog I've ever had howled. Infact at 1pm
every first Saturday, most of the dogs in the hood crank it up.
Thanks for the posts guys, I live out in the woods a bit and my bitch (Hailey)had never heard sirens, that would be interesting though. The funny part about my "future" mother in law leaving the message is that they just spend a week here and was calling to let us know that made it home ok. Anyway, good stuff guys, thanks for shareing....
My dogs have me trained to shuffle out the door in my nightie and slippers and tell them to cool it, that's the morning "greeting" howl, I get another howl at noon and one after supper. Loading up the dog truck will get them going, too!
Lynn, the howling is understandable with your dogs. Everyone knows that sled dogs are part wolf.

Thanks you Michele M.!! I have added this to my "favorites". New pup still won't howl (when I play it he just wiggles his head back & forth), but I love these soulful sounds.

My last dog who was a husky cross would howl whenever i played the song Space Cowboy by Steve Miller....I think it was the Harmonica in the song...but it never failed. If anyone put that song on his ears would go up and he would howl the whole song. The funny thing was, it was on an episode of the Simpsons one time (Homer was singing it) and although he didn't howl then, his ears still picked up when he just heard the lyrics!
My male pitbull will howl whenever there is a siren, but he will also howl when my husband plays his bass guitar. King can be out in his kennel and start howling whenever my husband starts to practice. It is so funny because we noticed it last summer. We had our windows in the house up and whenever my husband would do a chord, king would howl. So my husband and king sat there for 2 hours making up their own songs, needless to say our next door neighbors did not appreciate the new duo.
