In all the dogs we have ever owned over the years (WAY too many to even think about counting), we have NEVER vaccinated against KC... and we have never had a single dog get it.
Thats cool that you have never had a problem, but I have been doing rescue and boarding most of my adult life. I have rescued around 1200 dogs in the past 7-8 years that we kept records of. Never had one get sick because of it. I will say that I don't see the really crazy stuff anymore. The last time I saw that was around 92. I can also say that it doesn't affect all dogs the same, I have seen it go past some dogs and get others pretty hard.
There have been many studies (will see if I can find them) on the kennel cough vaccine vs nosodes for it. In one study (done with rescues/spca's etc) it showed that the homeopathic remedy was far more effective than the vaccine and most dogs vaccinated came down with kennel cough.
Kennel cough has been rampant in my area this year. Dogs that came down with it were all vaccinated for it. My dogs came into contact with the dogs that had kennel cough (non of mine are vaccinated) and none of them came down with it.
My one dog caught kennel cough 2 yrs. ago at the age of 4 months. Got it from her brother who was vaccinated for it and then he came down with it 10 days later. He passed it on to my girl and another sibling that was visiting. My dog (fed raw) had a slight cough for a few days and that was it. Both brothers (one who got it from vaccine and the other who caught it from him) both had a more hacking cough for 2 wks, some dirrereah and a bit of lethargy but neither needed antibiotics). My girl lived in my house with 5 other dogs (NONE of whom had been vaccinated) and none caught it from her.
The best defence is a good immune system...not a short lived vaccine against a few strains of it. Course...this is just my opinion and experience.
