I knew there was a reason my 3 day mail always takes 10 days to get here. How about hooking me up with a refund...Oh yeah, you don't do that.
What kind of protection training are you doing with a 10 wk old puppy? i'm curious to what pp training is possible at that age, to the mods: i'm not giving advice on a pp thread, just wondering if i missed something, so i'm asking a question to try to gain a little education,
Thanks,
AL
There's not much going on at this stage. Just having the puppy alert to a knock at the door...or chase a "bad person" out of the room. It's all a game at this point.
Okay ,how do you set up the chase the "bad person" out of the room scenario with a 10wk old? Maybe i just don't get it, but my dogs at 10wks old were just learning to pee outside and maybe play with a prey item a little bit, nothing like alerting or chasing bad guys,
AL
If you have a pup with the right genetics it is very possible to do these types of exercises. It it just play to the pup but you are establishing behavior patterns.
From the posts there is nothing wrong with the training/imprinting described.I have seen 9 week old pups do more complicated exercises.
I didn't give an opinion if there was anything right or wrong with the op's training /imprinting, i just asked how he set up the scenario. Can you describe some of the more complicated exercises you do with a 9week old pup, and i'm not arguing, i'm curious, that's all,
AL
From my reading of these, it seems like we're arguing semantics (if we're arguing at all). (Greg, use your dixshunery) I think it's very possible to IMPRINT a young puppy, as well as teach these behaviors; however, "protection training" probably isn't the best word choice. PREPARING/IMPRINTING for protection training would be more explanatory and more accurate. Unless you have a really chickens&*% "bad guy" who is actually intimidated and overcome by a small puppy .
I, too, would be interested in hearing specific exercises.
The way it was set up was I held my puppy in the corner of the room on a 6 foot leash while a handler with his 3 yr old doberman did the same. A "bad guy" then came and started beating on the door and opened the door and started taunting the dog. Of course the 3 yr old dog went ballistic as my puppy watched. My puppy only had to observe about 3 times before he figured out what to do. Now, he does it alone and every time he "wins" by chasing the bad guy out of the room. He loves it...it's a game to him right now.
