Will,
I don't know if it's the best, but I can think of about 12 or so clubs (USCA, DVG, PSA) within 2 hrs of the Washington DC Metro area.
I can't vouch for the quality of all of them, but I know there are certainly a few good ones there. I don't live within that 2 hr radius, so I travel from the outside-in to Palmyra, VA (Charlottesville) to train with Armin Winkler.

				 ( Ingrid......*Montana*.....are you daft? )
Yes I hither from Filthadelphia and went to college in MT and never left. I have to say the state does have its perks - unfortunately dog training is not one of them. Although, the schutzhund community is so small and needing members that they did not even blink when I brought my ACD out of the car

Well, meth labs and tweekers aside.... I think Fontana is pretty cool place to be training dogs. I think there's 4 schh clubs or serious training locations within an hour .... within a 2 hour radius you can hit clubs in San Diego, Ventura, etc. Tons of trials and a huge AKC circut with shows every weekend. Tracking is about 1/2 hour drive from here (with no traffic). And if you don't count last weekend's "winter storm warning" the weather is pretty darn good too.
That whole high crime rate really gives Fontuncky a bad name though!

In Denver we have 4 Schutzhund Clubs (with about four more a few hours away) a PSA club and two Mondio Ring Clubs. The weather really does play a factor. When it's 10 degrees it's hard to get the motivation (and enough clothes) to go outside and work the dogs. I wouldn't say Denver is the best but at least we a little variety (it would always be nice to see more).

Bay Area (SF in CA). Lot of clubs, but also serious competitors and great helpers.
Also, GA.....Better helpers than our area (no one at high levels up here...), more choice, nice clubs, people that know there stuff and will let you do your own training if you know what you are doing and knows what it takes to get to and compete at whatever level.

Both areas - people that focus on the sport and not the politics and the me-me-me thing.

Washington State is not bad. 5 USA clubs and around 3 DVG clubs in the seattle-olmpia area. Vancouver B.C. is close and there is some excellent training going on up there. Several Wold class judges in the area Willie Pope and Doug Deacon. Tracking is hard by the cities, but a little ways out pleanty of options, hay, turf, dirt. The weather is constantly a little wet, but you can train year round. Some excellent trainers in the area, people and clubs for the most part get along well. Different styles and things to learn.

I think Willie Pope is actually in Spokane, WA- which is 8-9 hours from here (or 6-7, the way I drive
But I'd like to chime in for the Greater Vancouver area, too. Four FR clubs (that's just the 'official' ones,) five SchH clubs (I think..just not that up on my schutzhund,) and at least one PSA club. Regional and national selected FR decoys. Nice mild weather as well- most of the time- so there's year round training. And we're just a few hours up the coast from some great people in WA.

The only thing we're missing is ASR. Sigh. I'm not going to hold my breath, but man, that would be nice.

It's not totally out of the realm of possibility for an ACD to do schutzhund, and congrats to you for giving it a try! As with any other 'alternate' breed, it's a lot tougher to find the right individual for these sports but it is very rewarding if/when it comes together.
