......If you can't find the kind of distraction that you need to work your way up...set them up yourself. Enlist the help of friends & their dogs, kids etc......
Ah........this is the topic I have been waiting and hoping for.
I'm working with one of my dogs on the recall, which is great without distraction (aren't they all), but the pits if there's any fun thing around, like a deliveryman.
He isn't distracted by my other dog -- just other dogs, people, etc.
Can anyone suggest a manufactured distraction that I could use for daily sessions, when most of my friends/neighbors/club members are at work? (I work at home and like to do short training sessions or walks every couple of hours or so.)
It may be a really stupid request. I know *I* can't think of anything that doesn't require someone coming and working with us.
Thanks!

Maybe you can take note of when the mailman or UPS man comes thru the neighborhood & take the dog out & work him during those times using them as the distractions. Or on
your lunch break you might go to a school when they have outside gym classes or ball games & stay over on the side of the field (away from them) but close enough to interest the dog & use the kids playing as distractions. Obviously, use a long line on the dog to correct if needed on the recall. Just some thoughts.

*Good* thoughts, too. Never thought of the high school field that's less than three blocks away! LOL!
Both scenarios could also reinforce his not-jumping-on-people lessons, too, which have been a little hard because he doesn't do it to me. It doesn't help that everyone says "Oh, it's OK," and actually encourages it.
(This is a Pug. I'm surprised at how much longer it takes to train the two Pugs I've had than any other breed I've owned or trained. Heel, sit, and stay have been the only easily-trained and reliable commands with him.)
Thank you!

I just wanted to re-iterate the previous statement that was made by another member, "I am glad you started this thread".
I know recall is important, it was a challenge I never perfected with my Beagle. But been working on with the dog we have now. He is fine without distraction and in the backyard with the neighbors dogs barking, but on the ball field he is oblivious. Guess I will need to keep working. I have not tried the e-collar yet. But think that might be the next step if I can't get the recall down.

I train my dogs everywhere & I mean everywhere. I pop them out of the truck where ever I am & work them...even if it is just a few minutes of tug or toy retreives & heeling. Consequently, they will work anywhere, anytime with any distractions. I work them daily at a school with all kinds of ball games, other dogs training & running by within 15 feet doing their retreives, kites, minibikes, go carts, scateboards, toy rockets, fireworks, etc, etc, etc. My female will work in the middle of a warzone & down stay or recall no matter what...even with cats, squirles & chipmonks running by. These critters are fairgame in the back yard. BTW I never used a e-coller on her to proof her for any of this. My male, I have only had a few months, & we are working on it, but he will work under almost the same distraction level. It just takes tons of trianing to get to this level. It's not hard, it just takes time. Keep at it...it will come. But keep it fun & have fun training you dog.

Add distractions/time = reduce distance. Add distance = reduce time/distractions. Specially for a pug!

I will heed this, since it was you who helped me with the command for him to step behind me and stay behind me in an encounter......
Of course, it was also you who warned me about training Pugs, and THAT's when I should've listened!

I did also tell you I know of a really good ONE out there. It's all about finding what trips your dog's trigger.
