A bit of experience...I had posted this story previously, however, it seems pertinent again.
My dog, at 2 years of age, split her bottom left canine. Didn't *exactly* know how, but highly suspected she had split it on a bone (?).
Being that she was only 2 years old, I opted for reconstruction of this canine. This may or may not be an option for your dog, but if it is...
I remember the vet telling me that it was possible that the dog *may* get an infection, say 10 years down the road and we'd have to take another look at it, apparently due to the damage and *particularly* with it being the canine.
Well, 10 years *exactly*, she was 12 years old, she developed an abcess deep in that gum line. We removed the canine at that point ( they didn't offer no dentures!!!) and cleaned up the predicted infection. No further problems.
Just thought I'd touch on that aspect of the canine thing. Good luck with your dog.

Thankyou all who posted, emailed and PM'd
The vet I found (a non-emergency vet who is luckily open on Saturdays) gave me Etogesic 300mg tablets to give once a day for 7 days, I believe he said it was anti-biotic/anti-inflamatory... and 28 Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium) 375mg tablets, twice a day for 14 days for a pain killer. He said if the tooth starts to yellow/gray and I'd like to opt to see a canine dentist he can refer me to a specialist in Tampa, which is about 90 minutes away from me, but hopefully that won't be neccesary and it'll clear up within a week. Unfortunately it all took way longer than I had hoped, 7 hours from when the incicdent occured, which was enough time for the blood to clot which means I have no clue whether the pills will have any effect or if it's gonna be a root canal/tooth replacement deal. We'll see.
Looks like Cujo's on a minimum 2 week break on his bitework. I gave him some doggy ice cream to hopefully get some ice on that tooth.

Mike, did the vet say whether it was a bruise or did he say what he thought caused it?

Did he eat the ice cream? I would think that'd be a good sign.
I know he is on a great diet. Maybe adding a little live-culture yogurt to it will help counteract the way antibiotics kill friendly fauna and flora.
You did good, getting him to a dentist on a weekend.
Etogesic is (I think) one of the most potent NSAIDs there is for dogs. I didn't know much about Clavamox, but I looked it up today and read that it's a better form of amoxicillin (semi-synthetic penicillin) that's especially effective for soft-tissue injury (like inside a tooth, I would imagine).

How is he doing with it? Sometimes antibiotics cause vomiting at first, but I think it's more common that they don't -- just a little queasiness, maybe, at first.
The poor guy. I hope he's not uncomfortable. Hey, it's fortunate that he is on THK food, huh? You can leave out the RMBs for this healing time!

He said the same as the website I quoted - inflamation of the pulp tissue.

He doesn't seem to notice any issue with his teeth, I came home after being gone 4 hours tonight n he ran circles around me whining happy as ever trying to bite my jacket sleeve LOL, he's never been one to show pain, he'll run 3 legged without a complaint if he gets those lil prickly plant things between his toes that get caught on shoelaces when running thru a field. So I give him the painkillers just in case it does hurt but he's not showing signs of pain, I can't imagine it NOT hurting!! He's a tough lil guy
He ate dinner just fine, ate a hotdog when I put him in his crate, and ate the ice cream with huge enthusiasm, he has no issues barking out the window or anything. I think the purpleness of his tooth has lessened in the last 6 hours too, it's not as pronounced as it was this morning, so it's a good sign, hopefully it'll clear up within a few days and all this will have just been a horrible warning as to the fragility of a dogs teeth!!

Oh, yes, *all* those sites said that the purple/gray color retreating would be a good sign.
Oh, what a relief, huh, that he's not miserable!? He is a tough little guy.
Keep us posted! I'm betting that the speed with which he got the antibiotic and the strong anti-inflammatory med made a big difference (since every dental web site said "Don't wait; GO").

Thank goodness it looks better . It's especially hard with guys like yours who are stoic by nature. I too, would give him the pain meds (just in case). So, I guess if both vets said the same thing, that's good, at least you know what you are dealing with.
