Carol, there's nothing mystical about terrier training. The only thing I've found is, in general, they tend to set thier heels a bit more if they aren't having a good time. Motivational training rocks!
The only thing I really know about the Decker Rat Terriers is they are HUGE. That definetly takes them out of the earthdog class. Temperment wise, I don't know much about them. I've owned Kerrys, Norwich, Bull, APBT, Borders, JRT, and hunted behing many that most people never heard of. I also had the worlds ugliest dog, a terrier/poodle. With the exception of the Bull Terrier, I think they are as intelligent as anything out there, and will learn anything you can teach them, AS LONG AS they think their having fun. Now that Bull Terrier was...well, I wont say dumb, but he was a total party animal, and didn't give a rat's a$$ if you came to the party or not.

OED Bob,
One question I'd like to ask you is what type of training would be best -- fun motivational etc. but I don't feel I'm experienced enough to do this on my own -- even with the videos, podcasts etc. Therefore I need to either take him to a class, have a trainer work with us at home, or have a trainer take him and do in kennel training. Which method do you recommend? I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks ~Carol

I would recomend motivational training for most dogs today. One of the better books on the subject, IMHO, is 'Purely Positive Training' by Sheila Booth. I'm not totally motivational, as described in the book, but it's a great start. Ed's Basic Obedience tape is a little more traditional, but excellent in it's explinations of level of corrections, praise, determining what level correction your dog needs, etc.
There are a gazillion training methods/variations out there today. It's really up to you to decide what will work best for you and your dog.
Most basic dog training classes will follow the more traditional methods, with a little more motivational thrown in.

I'm gonna get that book. It sounds like Ed's tape (which I have and have also started to give to clients at the end) and that book are a good combo.

Great, thanks Connie! Now everyone can see what a 12 week old Decker RT looks like.

Whoa! I hadn't even taken in the landscaping! WOW! It's the exact opposite of my yard!
