Sounds like you're making progress. I find though that if I can get the dog on a down stay instead of a sit stay, it's harder for the dog to bark and they can't do the stiff legged posturing to the other dogs, so it's naturally a more submissive posture that all but the most dominant other dogs around tend to ignore. My dogs get fed at the same time in different parts of the house (one by his crate in the living room and the other two in different sides of the kitchen), but they have to hold their down stay for at least 60-90 seconds before I'll release them. They aren't ready for competitive obedience yet or anything, but man, it's helped a lot.
