it is blood flow to the capillaries of the ear that causes them to stand up. i would suggest making sure that there are no creases forming in the ears at 8mos. younger pups i would not be concerned; but at eight months if creases form at the bottom of the ear, then they may not stand up.
I know this will sound way out there, but can you crop a GSD's ears <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> just wondered <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
As far as the surgery goes, it is possible, but you will forever face ridicule. Cropped ears in any show ring is a SERIOUS FAULT and you would be laughed out of the ring (no offense). Plus, it's ears wouldn't look natural, rather they would look like a dobe's. At 2-5 months, don't worry about ears, worry about raising your pup to become the dog you want her to be, and make sure all those baby teeth are shed! Ears are only cosmetic.
I've got a 5mos. old GSD.His ears were a concern of mine too. At 5 mos. they just started standing. Some days they're up ,some days they're down, but from what I understand teething plays a big role.
