Karen,
Thank you for sharing your experience. What you're going through is what every dog owner dreads. One lesson I have learned and try to apply each day of my life is to appreciate and enjoy ALL those around me so that when the day comes that they are no longer here, I'll have no regrets. It sounds like you've cherished your 16 years, good for you.
I obviously have no idea of your beliefs but, for what it's worth, I absolutely believe that we will indeed all be reunited with our pets and other loved ones. And I believe that we're allowed to suffer so that we can fully appreciate the idyllic life that we and our pets will one day have. Your beloved companion will be faithfully waiting for you. God bless you, your family and your beloved pet.

I do believe and I know it's Gods will and he's calling him and Simba will be waiting for us at the entrance of heaven when it's our time to be with him and God. I know he'll be in a better place, I just want to be in that place with him because I don't want to be without him...Connie said it best...there is good memories and peace AFTER the grief. I will not know my life without him nor will my boys. 16 years is a long time and I know we are blessed to have had that with him. God bless you all for all your warmth, it surely helps.

Helping ease your dog's way into the next world is the most humane thing to do right now -- Your old friend cannot tell you in words that he's miserable, but his condition speaks for itself...
We've all been there, and believe me, it's not any easier to do the 10th time than it was the 1st time <:-(
My only suggestion, besides having someone else do the driving, is to hold him while your Vet gives him his last gift from you (the dignity of a painless death) because that's the kindest way for your dog to leave this world, at peace in the lap of his beloved master...
God will hold your hand & you will see your faithful pet again, beyond The Bridge.

I have decided to be with him and to hold him along with my husband. I didn't want to at first but he knows my voice and my scent so he will know it's me with him, telling him how much Mommy and Daddy love him and how much joy and love he brought us and we will never forget him and to remind him to wait for us because we will meet again. I can not tell you how the outpoor of love from all of you have eased my pain and made my heart more open to facing the fact that I'm doing the right thing and it's my baby's time...God is calling him. Thank you all so much and Thank you to Leerburg for giving us this opportunity to share and be there for one another during this terrible time we all will face at some point in our lives.

You won't regret staying by his side, even though it's hard on you (they're gone before the syringe is empty & it's over in the twinkling of an eye) but do have a friend drive you, because your husband won't be up to it on the trip back home either, believe me -- God bless you all.

Just wanted to leave a note and although you have seen the poem already I love this little film http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html
I lost my first dog almost 6,5 yrs ago now, and think of him still so much but more now with a smile than a tear, although the tear is still there.
My thoughts are with you. When you let him go the memories begin.......a way to keep him with you always.
Bog hug to you and all your family.

Karen,
Thoughts are with you. I went through this in October (unexpected) and the support from people that understand it made/makes the difference.

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts. Last night was tearful, I laid with Simba for a little while even though he was ready to be left alone and to get back on his favorite pillow. He laid on my chest for a little while and let out a deep sigh...I want to think that deep sigh means "oh Mommy, I love you too"...after a short while, I put him back on his pillow where he slept until this morning...not one peep from him. When I look at him it's almost as if I see my little puppy I once had 16 years ago but then he opens his eyes that are now all blurred and can't hear me when I call him. Another day to struggle but I am so much more at peace with all this than I was yesterday...thanks to all of you!
