Oh, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> right! I didn't even think of a 6' nylon for the interim until he can get the good leather one! Might be rough on the hand(s), but so is a cheapo leather one. Good point. And then, as everyone says, the really good leather one would be a top priority for when the money is available.
If you have access to a farm store, pick up a brass snap, a brass rope clamp and a length of cotton or nylon rope. A little hammering and ... you have a sturdy leash or long line. The ropes do fray quickly if you drag them across pavement, but they are soft on the hands and machine washable.
