Hey Connie! I applaud you and envy you for the relationships you have been able to cultivate with your local butcher!! ..........
I was initially quite concerned about the various dogs' abilities to process these bones natuarally. We had a couple of random pukes in the first couple of weeks, which included small bony parts.....
Yes, I have found that every dog I've adopted and switched to raw has had a little "learning" curve, as the system re-learns the natural enzyme production, etc., when the bones weren't perfectly processed. (And weight-bearing bones, IMO, really aren't processed well enough to be relied on for any big portion of the "B" part of RMB; that's why I grind those.)
Again, I want to stress that "small local" stores, including a chain of 4 local natural foods stores and an independent supermarket which has been a mainstay of this town since 1938 -- that's where I found butchers who were happy to go the extra mile and do the extra step (the cleaning after grinding my order).
Wow - now I wish I would have asked here about meat grinders instead of just making the impulse purchase. (ready, fire, aim anyone?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. The Maverick came yesterday. I haven't used it yet, but plan to try it even on the heavier bones - might as well find out right away if it works on those or not.
