Flea collars are pretty much worthless. Using a good quality topical like Frontline or K9 Advantix is a much wiser investment of your time and money, especially if you go hiking or something similar with your dogs.
See, I was using a one month topical by Hartz but I thought the flea collar would be a wiser choice due to petting.
I have used sevin dust once a week on adult dogs with good luck; these are hunting dogs . I still had to pick ticks from their ears. In heavy infestation areas I doubt any product gives 100 % protection
I've used Bio-spot for the past 2 years. It has worked very well for my dog. She has stayed flea/tick free, even though I'm surrounded by woods and a swamp.
And the cost is very resonable. Under $3 a month for my 40# dog.

ok after using frontline or advantix is it safe to pet your dog or how long will you have to wait.
Well, a test on gloved hands was done by the Department of Agriculture at Murray State University, KY.
They found the highest residue was 24 hours after application, and then decreased to zero after 4-5 weeks. My own feeling is that kids are best off learning to wash their hands after petting the dogs, since they are more prone to getting their hands into their mouths. I myself am not very careful, but of course I do wash my hands anyway before handling food or eating. Just my own opinion/experiences.
Does anyone else know more about this?
I understand others have good luck with BioSpot. I had a terrible experience with it. Maybe the animal has to be totally flea-free first, but I had a rescue who was at least as flea-ridden after three weeks with BioSpot as she was when she came, but a day or two after using Frontline she stopped scratching and the fleas and "flea pepper" were gone. Just my experience.

Hartz and several other companies are known for putting out dangerous products and many pet owners are actually boycotting all their products. For example:
Flea collars by Hartz and others have been described as poison necklaces and are largely ineffectual anyways. You get what you pay for, I guess...though as an environmetal toxicologist specializing in endocrine disruption, I'd like to see further studies of Frontline and K9 Advantix.
