Ah yes Nancy, at 19 yrs old I was a genius! Amazing just how thoroughly humbling 28 years of parenting 6 children is to a person. Now I am just a simple minded old geezer that has very few illusions left, most things are just obvious these days.
I am a happy man, good wife, good career, kids that do listen most of the time(some are still young), and a GOOD GSD. All I need now is to retire from the Navy and go fishing and hunting more.

Like Mark Twain said
"when I was 14 I thought my father was the dumbest person on the face of the planet.......
When I turned 21 I was amazed at how much the old geezer had learned in 7 yrs !!!!!!
Treat them like they are animals.
Train them like they are animals.
Love them like they are people. |

Kevin:
"a GOOD GSD" should have come after "I am a happy man". Everything else is just icing on the cake! Nothing comes between a man and his GSD! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

A final update on this, Dutch was finally X-Rayed and YES he was completely dysplastic, on the vet's advice he was put down at 14 months old. It was heart wrenching for my wife, my son and my daughter in law. I will say that my son learned a HARD lesson, what's more before he left for Iraq he showed me an Omaha newspaper in which these people were selling ANOTHER litter of GSD pups, same EXACT breeding, for $300.00 a piece. In FULL knowledge of what befell Dutch.

I am so sorry for you to have to go through this, despite your insight prior to him even getting the pup. Thanks for posting follow-up information, heart wrenching is right though.
Now your son knows, through his own personal experience. Unfortunately, some children *have* to do for themselves and learn the hard way.
As for that breeder...

P.S. for future reference, i wouldn't recommend your son buy pups out of the newspaper - in my limited experience most decent breeders can be found online (NOT saying everyone with a website is trustworthy), and you can usually find someone a good few people recommend.

Exactly, as I posted I think, I had already found him a wonderful litter of working lines about 2 hours to the N/W of Omaha, but when I told him that she was getting $1,200.00 a pup then he went for the newspaper and did it himself. Now, I wish that I could get copies of medical bills, reciepts for food, etc, etc, so that I could plainly point out the obvious. The obvious being that he did NOT save any money in the long run, and he ended up paying to have the dog put down to boot. Had he done as I advocated, then his family would have a fine, stable, healthy GSD for the next decade at least. And I really wanted to say this, but I didn't, thought it pointless at this point, not to mention somewhat in poor taste considering his loss. But the son finally did tell me that I was correct in the 1st place. I smiled and just said that "it'll be all right, and we all learn our lessons, now don't we?" He will do it right the next time.

Another heads up, these folks are also breeding Doberman Pinschers.

What a tough lesson to learn, so sad for the loss of a dog so young.
