I am happy to help folks draft something, but would need a lot more info on the situation and some of the stuff (doing his job too well, eg) to which you all are referring. You can pm me with anything you have. I don't have a ton of time right now but I love messing with stuff like this more than dogs but its important that anything you send in be rational and properly reflective of the situation. No "Dear Limey...sorry we saved you in WWII you blood-pudding eating bastards" flame letters. Fun to write but ineffective.
Hmmmmm...."...does his job TOO well..."?? how is THAT possible? i'll have to think about that a little...
the whole deal sounds kinda fishy to me (and by that, i mean the deal to euthanize this dog, BTW), but what do i know? i would be willing to e-sign a petition to save this boy (for one, because he looks JUST LIKE my boy), but only if i know "..the rest of the story..". even gorgeous dogs can be bad..
Ann I replied to your PM and I'm not a well worded person, I will write a letter if need be - but I didn't major in proper english.
I have collected signatures and I continue to do so.. so if someone wants to write the letter I"ll just forward everything I have (names, email and location) to you. Has anyone emailed them? What about updates? How can we be updated on the situation?

I emailed the police authority and one of the UK tabloid newspapers --- no response, so far.
I also spoke on the phone to the dog's handler; he was understandably reluctant to say much, but I got the impression he is very upset and that his family is trying to get things done, and that Saxon is getting a bit 'stir-crazy' at being kenneled rather than being home with his family or working.
I have written to them to tell them how outdated this mentality is, a perfectly healthy dog,who has a proven stable temperament, who has given service to his community deserves nothing less than secure loving home enviroment
to retire in not the needle, in South Africa service dogs in the SAPS and Metro are offered for a small donation to the handler first, and if they do not want them or do not have facilities to keep them can be offered to someone who is able to take them, Euthanasia should be the last option not the first.
This is Just CRAZY! I can only think some bureaucrat(sic?) is 1) so lawsuit conscious and 2) so cruel that the solution to a POTENTIAL problem (no matter how far-fetched) is to kill the dog.
I posted a thread with questions about the US army's policy of euthanizing war dogs at the end of Vietnam and was told that said policy is no longer. If only everyone else was on board.
Petitions signed. I suspect the police officials who made this decision would prefer not to be shot upon retirement themselves, even though they still knew how to shoo a gun, and are potentially dangerous.
