My springer spaniel -- hold your laughter -- will actually raise her hackles and tail, and bark loudly if someone comes up the basement steps and she can't tell who it is. It could be me coming up with her kibble for dinner and she'd still give me the same treatment.
Once, my mother, who Tessie is very protective of, was sleeping on the couch in the living room which is adjacent to said stairs, and a friend of my brother's came up the stairs (she'd never met him). When my mother woke up, the dog had him cornered! She'd literally backed him into a corner, barking like that.
She thinks she's part German Shepherd. As soon as you start talking to her or tell her to leave it/knock it off, she's right back to being the stereotypical "let's just cuddle" springer spaniel, though.
