"Not sure if this is just a myth, but I have been told that if a pup is neutered earlier in life..."
True it`a a myth. It`s mostly a learned behavior. I`ve had intact males that squatted and neutered males that lifted. It only matters if it affects your on personal sense of masculinity.
Yep, must be a myth. There are three male squatters in our club and all are intact.

I have a 4 1/2 mo old male GSD pup that has been lifting his leg since he was 9 weeks old! He doesn't do it every time he pees, but does it when he pees near the kennel perimiters or the perimiter fence. He has not lifted his leg on a tree or any other object yet, though. I'm guessing that it might be a territorial/dominance thing with him possibly since he is a pretty dominant pup. My other dog is a 3 yr old GSD bitch. I have never seen a pup do this at such a young age until he started doing it. It was pretty funny in the begining 'cause he used to loose his balance & almost fall over if he peed to long of a time. He did eventually figure out how to keep his balance on 3 legs.

My 13mo gsd still isn't lifting his leg all the way. Pretty funny, when he was a few months old he started spreading his legs the way a horse does, then he put his head down & peed on his chin. He looked up like "oh crap".

My male started at 6 mnths, I was told this is very early for a male some only lift at 18 mnths depends on dogs maturity level,
Since I mainly had females before this, it did not really worry me, He stills pees on his feet tho, his aim is up the creek LOL
I think the hormones have alot to do with it, my dog has always been a "humper" I think this had some bearing on it,maybe "humpers" mature faster who knows, all I know is that the humps are still around, still waiting for him to outgrow them, don't think he will tho, cos every girl he spots he likes, big or small makes no difference to him, lets hope he keeps it pocketed for his BH this year, otherwise I don't know how I am going to explain TO THE JUDGE what part of the exercise that is!
Sitz.. platz...Daiquiri anyone?

Since we are on the subject does anyone else have a dog that likes to back up to stuff and crap???
My male loves to back into bush "crap", back into fence "crap", back into tree branch "crap", back into cliff "crap". It has been years and we still laugh.
He was over a year before leg lift.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!! |

My GSD pup started lifting his leg at about 14 months. I don't know why he started, but he did.

To stay on topic, my neutered Dobe started lifting his leg around 9 months.
Regarding the question on bowel movements, my dog often does a semi-circle. So if I spot a pile, I need to do some geometry in my brain and tread lightly before moving in to clean up. Needless to say, my ability to visualize radii on the fly improved quickly after several "mis-steps."

I think the best comment ever on this topic was a while back when Ed said something like "peeing on one leg isn't all it's cracked up to be," and that peeing off the porch was more enjoyable, or something to that effect.
IMO, it's a combo of dominance, maturity, and hormones. My super dominant Chi lifts his leg as high as possible, backs onto stuff to do #2, but has never humped anything inappropriately. He was not neutered until 5.5 yrs and never had a male role model. My GSD lifted his leg around 16mos, but not reliably until he was almost 2, but is super dominant. Has to pee like 4 feet up the tree (very slow to mature, BTW). Another GSD I have is just starting to lift his leg at 19mos, and barely lifts it, peeing all over his front legs. Charming. And aromatic. He's so submissive he even pees on himself, lol.
I guess if I had to say (b/c I really can't think of a less important trait) I prefer the high, one-legged pisser over the pisses allover front leg. JMO;-)
Whatever the style, I wouldn't worry about it.

My dog never lifted his leg (and I was happy about it) .... then I took him to the dog park for one hour when he was about 2 and after that he always lifted his leg! I think it is very much learned.

We need to get together and show off our radii vizualization skills I just think my dog is smelling for inspiration. As I said earlier in the thread, my dog definately learned to hike his leg from another male. The funny thing now is that he still doesn't really know why he is supposed to do that and instead of spritzing everything he'll hike his leg, empty his whole bladder, and then dry fire on everything else
