I find, with my dog at least, if he's alone in the backyard and someone comes up on the property he does the whole barking/growling alerting act, but if I am in the backyard with him...he doesn't do it at all, unless I haven't noticed the person. I'll watch him, and he will always spot the person, turn around and look at me. If I am standing up and facing the same direction he watches for cues from me...if I am enthralled with my gardening and not paying attention...he'll bark. But I have taught him to always always bark when someone knocks on my door wether I am there or not. I wanted to make sure that he would do that so if anyone does come around they hear him first.
If your dogs see you as the pack leader, they might not kick up a fuss if you're there, they're going to assume you will take care of whatever the problem is.

That's a neat trick! How the heck did you teach him to bark while you're not there <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> ? Just teasing. My dog too always looks to me with this face like, "Well, should we bark or just ignore this one"? It's really kinda cute.
