I work my dogs off leash ALL THE TIME in my town in school fields, town park areas etc with & without school recess, baseball, soccer etc games going on & have never had a problem with a teacher or the local police, Actually, the teachers & kids will come up and ask me questions about my dogs & their training & the police cruise thru the school parkinglot & often times stop & sit & watch me work my dogs. I also take my dogs with me almost everywhere & pop them out of the truck & work them in all kinds of places (off leash) & have never had anyone complain. Then again, my dogs obedience is exemplary

We use "Dog on Property" or "Be aware of Dogs" signs.

I have a "German Shepherd Xing" sign posted in the entry to my driveway. Just letting people know they are driving onto a property that has dogs. I've heard of people having problems with "Beware of" signs.

Mike,
I was confused because I have never had a police officer tell me anything negative about GSD's. So your story makes sense.
Anyway, I went to my local town office today. While there I decided to get information on he price of registering dogs et cetera. I mentioned that the area I live in seems to be very dog friendly. The woman in the office told me she loves dogs and another office worker told me "We LOVE dogs around here." I mentioned that I hope to be registering a GSD pretty soon and the woman's response was "I LOVE GERMAN SHEPHERDS. I GREW UP WITH ONE!" They also told me that I am welcome to bring the dog in when I register him or her. SO Judy I think it is time for you to move!
Now, if I could ONLY get my dog!!!!

Ha! You may be right because everywhere else that I walk my dog (outside of this town) I get the same great reactions other posters have mentioned...beautiful dog, I love GSDs, I grew up w/GSDs, etc. It's just weird to think that the first dis my sweet pup got was from someone in my own neighborhood!

You kmow, if dogs were supposed to be (technically) barred from the event, it could be that the police were just kinda turning a blind eye to the dogs that were being brought in by their owners. Then somebody complained about dogs being where they shouldn't be, or someone else's dog (fat lady with little yapper comes to mind) made a nuisance out of themselves, the police were asked to enforce the "No dogs allowed" rule and ask someone to leave with their dog, and you were just the unlucky next person to come into the park with a dog after they had to stop turning a blind eye...

This is what I thought too. If there were no dogs allowed (a rule) but there were small dogs being quiet, a security person or LEO could maybe ignore them --- maybe up to the point until someone complains (about the barky one) or until the dogs are an un-ignorable presence. Not fair, of course, to ignore a small one and not a big one, but it's hard to say you didn't see a 75-pound dog walk in.
Editing to say that a dog's size SHOULD have nothing to do with it! But human nature being what it is.........

My big, sweet female GSD and I were at the airport one night and a woman saw her and said very loudly to her companion and everyone else within 300 feet, "It's a GERMAN POLICE DOG!! THEY'RE SO VICIOUS!!" A German police dog...??? Hello!! The woman's ignorance and lack of manners was breathtaking and I was speechless.
My girl and I were in S&R and she was a certified therapy dog. My dog was also in my classroom every day for 5 years. She comforted autistic students and students with seizures. She listened to troubled teens read aloud. She had a school staff ID card and her picture was in the yearbook. She signed yearbooks with her paw dipped in vegetable ink. She was adored by the kids and faculty. She was the sweetest, gentlest, most people-loving dog I've ever known. It's just that some people are as dumb as rocks.

Some people deal with racism, and some with specism. My dobe was cute up to a certain age, everyone wanted to pet her. Now they cross the street when we are out walking, and she is the sweetest dog!
Sometimes at work, people will ask me what kind of dog I have. When I tell them, the look on their face totally changes to disgust! "Oh THOSE dogs". Go figure.
Sorry it happened to you and your GSD.

Yep. And isn't it funny how they tend to be the most vocal? Like the airline encounter -- it's as if megaphones were handed out to make up for lack of brainpower.
