Steve, congrats on your new pup!! LOL - love of dogs can be a marriage maker! Caring for pet dogs was one of the things that brought me and hubby of 8 years together.
It IS very difficult for the "wife" (UM...me in this case) where the hubby is the more attractive person in general to the majority of the dogs.
I have sucked it up as the wife, and we have laid down some ground rule type agreements around here among the two humans and four dogs (with a smile on my face):
Wife (me): Is the absolute treat, toy, and food dispenser for two of the dogs. (one in SchH training, and one old track loving beagle)
Hubby: Is the absolute treat, toy and food dispenser for his "in training" SchH dog.
Cleopatra, our mutt, simply rises above all of this - truly a princess, and will catch a frisbee thrown by anyone who is willing to throw one. (she is such a Sl*t with her loyalties!)
MY SchH dog will always love my hubby more than me. I have accepted that! So long as I am the toy, treat, and food dispenser, I am the one she works for. And we have had an incredible week! (she just came home from being with a trainer for awhile) So I don't really care right now that she *loves* daddy more. She is *working* for me. So no divorces here over pets any time soon. But I understand what everyone is talking about!!
Back when I was single, acceptance of dogs in my.....(name your room or furiture item here) was a date making/breaking criteria.
One of my dogs has a difficult temperement, and my teenage daughter has often said: "I'm angry at my furry brother"...should I worry?

sniff track and dinner at end!!(COLD -3) 130am least fav toy.(pup tug only 13.5 weeks old) Then soft leather rolled up.5$(called some local leather guy. bonus he makes great stuff for xmas gifts)Then fav toy. She was unstoppable. 2am I want sleep. 215 I finally got toy. 220am she is on back bitting the crap out of me while dragging her to kennel. I Love HER.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!!
