BTW, canids are the only species susceptible to salmon poisoning, so don't hang up your sushi chopsticks.

Hi Ruth, You will not regret switching to raw! My current GSD pup is the 1st I have fed raw to. I did it because my breeder feeds raw, so I didn't want to subject the pup to sudden dietary changes, but I wasn't convinced it was the right way to to. It seemed so alien & bizarre to me.
I am now a staunch raw feeder. My attitude towards it is not unlike the attitude of an x-smoker around those who smoke - which I quit doing in September). Connie & Alice know what they are talking about, plus you can send Connie multiple PM's once you start feeding raw, & though she may be cringing at her desk, you would never know it by her answers (ex: "Connie HELP!!!,help, my puppy is looking cross eyed - does this have anything to do with raw?") On another note, I see I have lost a precious & highly coveted star. I was going to take it personally & pout, but decided I should temper all tantrums until I am sure my reactions are normal & not inflamed by cigarrette withdrawl.

They sure do. I HAVE PM'd Connie and she has been wonderfully supportive and helpful with everything I've asked about. If fact, her advice was instrumental in
keeping a seizure-alert dog in one of the classes I have and enabling a canine/human team to continue training. The powers that be were considering washing out the dog. Connie, I hope you don't mind us talking about you?
Truth be told, I don't know how the stars work. Can anyone add them? Where are they? I've actually searched for info on the site about those stars.
You QUIT SMOKING!!!!! You go girl!!!! I did too years ago, hardest, best thing I ever did. That will be a healthy change for your dog too.

Thanks for the pat on the back, Ruth. I needed it just now as I was having an "urge" to light up.

The raw salmon my dog ate was from a farm in Canada. My vet says to watch him for a few days. And let's not give him antibiotics and worm him if it is not necessary. Any thoughts on this approach? I looked up rickettsia and am so glad for the info from the board about raw salmon, because all I could find was a connection to ticks.

WHERE in canada?
does your vet have experience with this disease? from the way my vet has talked about her experiences with it, i feel certain she would put any dog that might have been infected on the antibiotics and wormer, just in case.
but, i don't know what kind of antibiotics or wormer are used, and if there are risks/side effects associated with them that it would be best to avoid unless absolutely necessary. some antibiotics can be very toxic.
maybe ask the vet the name of the antibiotic and wormer used, and google them to find out what associated risks there might be?

regarding the stars, i went from two to one some time ago, and dont' know why. probably somebody didn't like me talking about mastiffs.
if anyone reading this thinks anything i've written has helped them, go ahead and up my stars. you won't hurt my feelings any.

I would ask the vet to ask the CDC whether farmed salmon would be included.
I think I'd also ask about the fecal test rather than "just watching him."
I guess I would want more discussion than it sounds like you got.
