I had a similar incident with a pup and the vet recommended 1 day no food and then steamed rice and kaopectate (sp)for the upset stomach. That took two days with pedeolyte given by syringe and it cleared up no trouble.
worked for me.
I hadn't heard of the pumkin before, I'll keep that in mind for next time!

I've also always taken away regular food and just gave rice on the morning feeding. Then in the evening I mix some rice with some regular food. Always works and mine is 100% the next day or sooner.

Go to an animal/livestock supply and get some Tylan and mix it in some water and give it. Your dog's diarrhea will be gone soon.

I would NEVER advise just running to your local feed store, buying Tylan and giving it to a puppy. This is typically given for small intestine bacterial overgrowth and to just use it as a 'bandaid' for diarrhea is (in my opinion) irresponsible.

MIke this is irresponsible and rediculous advice. I was temped to delete your post but am not sure how many people had read it. You obviously have have a lot to learn about about breeding and raising healthy puppies.

diet is the obvious factor, but you might also want to rule out the possibility of worm infestation. pups i've bought have been one way or the other.....either very clean/worm free or a complete mess/so wormy it makes me want to choke the person i bought from.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers |

boiled rice and boiled hamburger is also a good bland diet often used by vets for loose stool...keep the puppy on it for several days.
ALSO - although it seems **highly** probable that the burrito caused the upset tummy...any time a young dog or pup has diarreaha, I would get the pup checked for worms, as well as coccida and giardia via a stool sample to the vet...just as a precaution!!! Both these parasites will cause runny stool, and are potentially very harmful if not treated. Most vets will check a sample for you without an office visit.

Reading this thread, one would think the dog world is awash in...well...you know!
Came home last week to a really stinky kitchen; my daughters 12lb halfbreed and the 90+lb gsd had been competing as to who could empty out faster. My poor 65lb gsd bitch sat in a corner, seemingly afraid she'd step on something! Opened the door and they all bolted out...and woouldn't come back in until we had completely cleaned and sanitized the floor (base boards, cabinets, etc).
It would have been funny if it wasn't such a awful cleanup job! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I had good success in feeding just cooked rice (very small quantities), and then switching them over to Hill's Canine t/d (available from the vet) for a couple of days. The t/d seems to be mostly just rice and corn meal...but 72 hours and both were back to normal.
Still waiting for the gsd bitch to catch this...whatever it was...but after a week she still hasn't shown and signs of intestinal distress. Maybe her secret is in all the grasshoppers she's eating.

I agree with Lee about the boiled rice and hamburger. Tried it last week with my dog who has not been feeling well and had a 'bout with diarrhea. She almost took my fingers off when I gave her the hamburger. Once I combined it with the rice and watered down some chicken & rice soup, she ate it all, took a long nap, and woke up happier.
I figured it was good comfort food for her, and she needed some lovin' like we all do when our insides aren't feeling so good...

Which is probably exactly what the puppy had.
Ed wrote "This is rediculous and irresponsible"
Hey I am not one to run a puppy to a vet every time a puppy has diarrhea if it can be treated effectively at home in comfort. Why stress the poor little guy more? Vet offices are the best place in the world for picking up diseases. I have what I believe is the best vet in the country and he is the one that recommended this treatment to me. At that age, 4 mos I believe, the most likely cause is pathogen. Coccidia? Tylan is safe, relatively inexpensive and EFFECTIVE. It is even FDA approved. Yes, as with any antibiotic you need to give yogurt or another probiotic after use. This is not rocket science here folks. This has been around and used by breeders and fanciers for years. I have consulted with some of the top nutritional experts in the world over the 14 years that I have been involved in canine nutrition and 20 years of breeding. There is no one more against antibiotics than me, but when it comes to a YOUNG puppy like that one described, time is of the essence in getting dehydration stopped before the puppy dies! If this is irresponsible or ridiculous, please tell me why!
