I don't even want to think about what I spend on dog food! But then I have a GSD, who is now 4, that has some digestive system "issues". She is on a diet of Urban Wolf (which is pre-made raw mixer that you add meat to). It costs me about $3.50 - $4 a day...Yikes! But I have to do what it takes to keep her healthy and at this point, this is what it is. When I fed straight raw, it cost about $1.50/day, but I found it was too hard to do with my work schedule.
My 7 month old GSD eats Canidae "All Life Stages" with great success. My Cairn Terrier, age 9, eats Natural Choice.
Guess what it boils down to is what is best for your dog
For treats, I really like the "Zukes" brand. They are the stinkiest things and my dogs really like them. They don't irritate my older GSD's stomach so I know they are pretty good...anything junky causes a flare up with her.
When looking at costs of various feeding options, I also like to consider potential savings in vet bills. Just over a year ago (we started feeding raw in January 05) our old beagle was in the vet regularly to be treated for hot spots, and then he had a MAJOR vet experience where his enzymes were out of whack, and he was there for several days to the tune of about $1,000 just for that visit.
I can buy 2,000 pounds of raw chicken for under $1,000. And of course their health and vigor is the priority - not the cost. But still - worthy of consideration IMO.
I saw a good quote today from a woman who is a dog groomer (so sees all the skin problems, coat problems, recurring infections, etc. all day long) in the UK. She is an advocate of raw feeding or all natural feeding. "It's the difference between surviving v. thriving for the dogs." I won't forget that one any time soon!

A big fat DITTO. And I don't mean some vague "maybe my vet bills are a little lower," either.
Of course things still happen. But just like humans on excellent food, dogs are just healthier when they're fed good food. That's my experience, anyway.
To the O.P.: It's hard to estimate someone else's cost because it depends on two big factors: How much your dog requires and where you get your supplies.
If you figure on 2-3% of the dog's weight per day, then you can do the math based on how much you pay per pound.
Melissa's $1.50/day sounds like a good estimate to me. Maybe $1 to $2, depending on your shopping, for an adult GSD.
Sandy, I just noticed you live in Phoenix... i'm located in Gilbert... so I'm sure i'll find it here somewhere, lol!
OH! Well, hi! I don't feed Canidae but I have good news for you if that's the route you're taking. There's a place in the Mesa area that delivers free, they carry Canidae as well as other of the better rated kibbles. I believe they deliver once a week to each area around the valley. The URL is Goober Express and their phone # is 480-668-4994. You can call and find out what day they deliver to Gilbert. They carry other stuff too, supplements, etc.
