Hi Becky,
The eyelid actually rolls in. The vet says it is entropion. I have spoken with a canine opthmologist and they will not do surgery until the dog is at least 6 months. Have you heard of pups outgrowing this? Thanks for your input. This is our first time for this and was just wondering if anyone had had experience with it.
in his case the facial scarring was quite severe. picture 1920's movie star pencil-thin eyebrows, a la clara bow. but he had so much excess skin, it blocked his vision (he was a mastiff), so part of the purpose of the surgery was to make it possible for him to see.
the surgery completely corrected that particular problem, and the entropion. however, he also had ectropion on the lower lids, and after so much of his face was carved up, there was no more room to correct the ectropion without cutting off circulation to parts of his face. so we managed that with daily eye rinses to keep pollen and grit away from his eyes.
this was a rescue dog, the result of an accidental breeding, and a good example of how beauty contests ruin the functionality of dogs (i.e. too much breeding for wrinkle.)
he recovered beautifully from the surgery and there were no complications at all. it took some time to convince me that it was necessary, too, so i understand your hesitation. finally my regular vet explained that the dog really had to have this, and she was right.
i'm petrified of general anesthesia, so trust me, i would never do it without a lot of research and being absolutely convinced of the necessity.
the best part was on the drive home, he was resting with his head between the front seats, and i looked down and he looked up at me!!!! it was the first time he had ever been able to do that! he could see!
Alice, sounds like your boy had a rough time. I'm glad he's OK. My little guy doesn't have anything nearly that severe. He doesn't even know there's anything wrong with him and you have to look really closely at the eye to tell.
Thanks again to everyone for sharing your experiences and advice.
