I only wish Congress had "acted" and brought back our war dogs from Vietnam instead of leaving them there to rot, with unknown sufferings and outcomes. Those dogs saved THOUSANDS of lives, yet no respect was given them, or their handlers, or those great veterans of that war, not by Congress, not by civilians. I have nothing good to say about Congress - any wind that blows is where these guys land.
Matthew P. I left this subject alone a while back, far to many civilians and particularly those who have not relied on a K9 in combat or on the streets patrolling will NEVER see how selfish this is. They only see the 'poor girl side of it'. You won't win with people who haven't been in these situations, there is no way for them to see, they can only go on what "feels" right. She's not the only handler to be wounded, the only female handler seriously wounded to my knowledge, think any of the guys got to keep their dog after being injured, NOPE!
I'm with Chris & company on this one. This is not a pet, this is a military dog. IF the dog had been injured badly enough to warrant being taken off active duty, then fair enough let him go to his last handler. But the dog was well enough to work. By doing this, she's putting the lives of military personnel in danger. IMO she acted like a whiny brat & got rewarded for it because people felt sorry for her.

I don't know how to explain how I feel about this,
Ptlm. Grubbs post just seemed really callous to me and so I answered. I see everyone's point on this and agree with everyone actually to an extent. I wish the dog could have stayed in service but I also think that it was okay that she have him also.
I am not a civilian who does not "get it" and I am not a bleeding heart liberal but I am also not a "staunch" NO YOU CANNOT person either. I know there is a happy medium here, I just have to find it and think things through before I say anything.
Ptlm Grubb, I apologize for "shooting my mouth off before it was loaded" on this issue. And as a person who can admit things, you are correct, that was a dumb question. :-)
I am a convert from pet owner to working dog owner and am still learning the "working dog" mentality. I am very strict with my dogs but tend to be a little to compassionate towards other people and their dogs. I would want my dogs to continue working if anything ever happened to me because of the service I provide, but I also know it would be hard for me to do that.
