What a highly unfortunate incident for ALL concerned <:-(
However (since I prefer most dogs over many children, absolute truth be told here...) I naturally wonder if this kid migh EVER have teased the dog through its fence (???) and even if that never happened, the latch on any PSD's kennel should NOT be a type that could "somehow come open" accidently !
I hope a solution will be chosen that doesn't include putting the dog down...

And from what I've experienced in the past, it's not necessarily that boy that may have teased the dog and prompted the bite. It may have been any boy(s) that could have repeatedly teased the dog in the past, prompting the reaction from the dog on that particular day to bite the boy on the sled.
Years ago my aunt had a GSD that was wonderful around girls/women but turned vicious around boys/men. He had been hurt or teased somehow while in his yard when he was young and for the rest of his life he was an aggressive/snarling GSD to all males that stepped onto his property - no exceptions.
If this K9 had no negative history before this incident, I'd wager something happened to the dog in the past, as opposed to a sudden change in temperment for no reason. I'm sorry but I have more faith in the dog being a victim of something as much as the child he bit.

Another poster began a second thread on this story, saying he knows the child (who required 176 stitches) which is very sad...
Two padlocks, one on the kennel gate & one on the yard gate could have prevented this awful incident -- That PSD wasn't kept under properly secured conditions, IMHO, so I'm with you in feeling that he may well have been exposed to taunting by neighborhood brats in the past (though not necessarily from this unfortunate boy, of course).

i'm definitely no expert, but it's my personal opinion that if the handler allowed his dog to be in the position where it could be teased, he probably wasn't doing his job as a handler. how can he expect to understand how his dog is going to react in certain situations (that's a pretty big part of a police dog handler's job, isn't it?) if the dog's been exposed to experiences he hasn't monitored?

One of the petitioners (for euthanizing) wrote "this is ridiculous - what if a person bit another person"?
The people want the protection & help afforded by these dogs, but want to send them to hell when one little thing happens. The kid got bit, not killed, not an amputation.
I think that sums up the sort of silly neorotic lynch mob mentality kind of people who sign these things. Such dolts.
Yes, it is too bad it happened, but it was an accident which can easily be fixed by double bolting the gate. On 2nd thought, I'm going to shut up & see what happens.

Got to be the owner/handlers fault, because the dog got out (same as if it got run over or it it killed someone). Sad for the kid and the dog.
I have a theory - if every time a dog bit someone/worried sheep etc. the owner was euthanised and the dog was fined, we would see far fewer of these incidents...
Cheers

Okay, I looked at the petition.
I spent 2 minutes and researched the person who started the petition.
Here is my info web on:
Name: Angelica Reid
Location: Abbotsford, BC, Canada
Age: 24
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 200lbs
Attended Abbotsford High school 1997-2001
Relation to child bitten: boss's daughter's friend
Interests and activities: pitbulls, possibly breeding, she did try to loose weight in 2006-05-01.
1 son, approx the age of 2
http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=2126743&pid=3202008
(photo of her pitbull and child)
owner of a pitbull
Possibly the same "Angelica Reid" who tried starting a pitbull kennel which burned down killing the dogs.
---------
My overall opinion? I don't care how many pitbulls this woman has had or known, she is NOT a expert on police dogs. Each breed has a difference in the attributes which people see. Her slander and demands won't be accepted by knowledgeable people. She is only making herself look like an idiot.
Also, I must define my opinion by looking at just these stats, and her interest of online petition activity. People are very readable, I'm a geek personally and can easily tell what kind of person they are just by looking at a few facts. This person is 200lbs for a reason. By definition, she is not an active person. Many of the breeders I know are usually very active people, mainly because they breed active dogs. I don't know much on pitbulls myself, but I'm pretty sure they like to exercise. She wouldn't be 200lbs if she was running with the dog each day. Her interest in pitbulls only makes me question why she even likes them and if she herself is a bad breeder.
other thoughts: If she was Reid in high school, then how come she is still Reid and has a kid?
end result: don't trust this woman or anything she has to say. This being on a forum future employers will see her zealotry and weigh her actions in upon employment.

Dude, I think you went a little bit over-board here. Saying that you can judge people by a couple of "FACTS??" over the internet is pretty retarded in my opinion also. What you posted was wrong and in my opinion kinda stupid.
I know a few very active 200 pound women that would put you to shame in their knowledge of dogs and their ability to train them. You should re-edit your post and take all that personal crap outa there.
As a side note I am in no way sticking up for the person that started this petition but this kind of personal slam on someone is not what this board is about. I think????

David,
I'm also going to say we don't flame here. Posting her personnel info here is not right; it would have been enough to say you disagree with her & the reasons why.
