I agree with Connie and Angelique also, although obviously use common sense when it comes to corralling the dogs.
Having documentation (and witnesses) helps A LOT in court cases. If they've been convicted of anything related to their dogs, she may be able to get ahold of it. Stuff like that is available through the Freedom of Information Act here in MA.
I had a dog that kept coming back to my house and trying to eat my cat and taking enourmous dumps on my front lawn. I called the owner. Two times. Then I called animal control. Two times.
Finally, I took the dog to the animal shelter that was 50 miles away from my house and let them call the owner to tell them they had him.
That was the last time I saw that dog on my property. I drove by and they had the Silent Fence installed. Looking back, I wouldn't have given the owner 4 chances.
Your friend has to be really active if she wants this to stop, IMO.

Hi,
She has no children. The owners of the dogs do.
I have sent all this information to her.

Ms. White,
The cops "refuse to do anything?"
Now, that is hard to believe - I mean, I believe you but in this day and age when dogs attack children, and cops are shooting pit bulls...
Is there a dog warden? Usually the person with the dog(s) in question at the very least gets a little first visit that puts them on notice that they are to control their dogs. And the visit is documented.
An irate citizen calling the cops usually gets some response.
And if the dogs in question are pit bulls there is usually serious attention paid by the cops. At the very least, they should take a complaint for the documentation of the situation.
Is your friend a nice person who avoids confrontation? I ask that question because most of the people on this site are nice people who would not avoid dealing with the problem. In my case, I am neither nice nor would I avoid a confrontation, in fact, it occurs to me that that might be why my neighbors avoid me. Hmmmm...
She should call the cops again and demand a report be written, call the dog warden and demand a report be written, and contact the lawyer who helped her close on the house for a bit of 'free' advice, and contact the real estate organization and complain about their failure to disclose the proximity of dangerous dogs, and... Make a meal of the thing. It is her house and she has a right to enjoy her property without some idiot neighbor conditioning her use of it.
I would not urge her not to deal with the dogs herself. A camera, and an immediate complaint.
Time for a cup of coffee.
Mike A.

Mr. Arnold,
I do hope you enjoyed a stiff and strong cup of coffee.
I am getting this story second hand. If you read my previous post, I indicated that I was not sure which agency she called. (I am getting the story from a mutual friend.) I have sent all the information to her. I have stressed that the dogs are a danger and there will be an unfortunate incident.
I was told that whatever agency she called told her they couldn't do anything about it. Why? I have no idea.
I will say there was a mauling of a little girl by a dalmation in this metropolitan area. Many people had complained about the dog roaming and nothing was done until someone was injured.
Thanks for the advice. I will keep everyone posted on the developments.
Mr. Arnold, how was that coffee?

Mike ,
I'm with you, I wish I could spell too
I agree with the fact that Some facts are missing and maybe it's because it's a second kind of telling.
Carol, I think we are baffled a bit and getting the story second hand does not help.I understand your frustration for your frined but what else can be said?
I hope something is done real soon for her sake and safety...

Screw the nieghboors protect your kids. It varies state to state
but if a dog is very close and violent you have the right to kill it. My family is first and formost. If one of my children's lives where in danger I would legally ilminate the threat.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!! |

When we were kids my dad practically made a sport out of stray dogs shooting. The law was, if it's on your property, you can shoot it. We had to protect our horses and other animals, though dogs did chase them and killed our goat. I'm sure a few neighbors got their heart broken. Doesn't sound like these neighbors would though.
