I have to say I got a good laugh out of the original post about the human society. These people are basically well intended but completely lack experience and knowledge about pack structure.
I wonder what they would say about the DVD I did on Dominant and Aggressive dogs? I demonstrate the finer points of exactly how to hang an aggressive dog - I prefer to call it "Take their air away".
What I would like to see is a DVD that the Humane Society would produce on how to train some of the same handler aggressive or dominant dogs.
Goodness, people! Be considerate. Don't you know that you can stop pit bulls from eating people with a clicker (with wristie!) and a bucket of Charlee Bears?
...Sarcasm intended, of course.
When the Humane Society tells me exactly what I should be doing when my dog is being a snarky bitch and lifting her lip at me, or when I have a dog at work hanging off the sleeve of my jacket... then maybe I'll give a rat's ass about what they have to say about dog training.
Sheesh.
My husband and I passed by an adoption event this weekend. All the dogs were being pushed as "really sweet". I'm sure they are! But probably really unruly, and due to that (human error/neglect) they're bounced from home to home.
We adopted a four year old Saint Bernard last year. The pound actually located the owners and they refused to pick him up. I was really surprised - He was well groomed, toenails done, bathed, in really good shape. Real sweetheart-but zero manners. I suppose you can only live with a spastic 100+ pound animal for so long before you lose your mind.
So maybe people are "loving" their animals to death - literally! Can't handle the behavior anymore, but too "nice" to discipline the animal, so let's "do the right thing" and find it a new home. Just pawn the poor animal off - how many end up being put down or crazy from going from home to home. . .
