Sheryl , why are you not letting the mother with her pups?
She needs to clean them on a moment basis, bowl stimulation is very important for their well being, and for many other reasons..
That would be my question too, Sheryl, why the mother is not left with the puppies?
Statistics show that you loose pups from moms laying on top of babies. I have heard this from the breeder as well as books. So I am bringing the mom to the babies every 3-4 hours around the clock for the first 2 weeks, now about every 4 hours. Finally letting them go from 10 PM till about 5 in the AM.....I am exhausted.
Pups are now almost 4 weeks old and the mom doesn't want to feed them, I think its the teeth coming in. So my new question is, is it safe to let them drink on their own or should they be bottle fed? They're a little wobbly on there feet and get the formula all over them, but they do like it. Just worried it may get up their nose, they have very flat faces...but boy are they cute!
At 4 weeks they should be able to eat from the dish exclusively. Use a low flat dish like a pie plate(thanks Cindy)the glass ones work the best. The puppies won't tip them and they are low.
Hi. My bitch had pups last month and we had one pup that was very small and could not latch on to his mother. My DH and I took the pup to the vet where they supplied the syringe(which was too small) so I ordered some from Ed and used his puppy formula. The pup did great on the formula though the vet had a cow when she found out that I was using a raw egg in it. I was tube feeding him every 3-4 hours and weighed him once a day in the morning. I slowly increased his formula and eventually switched to a baby bottle. I also made sure he was fed by his mother but fed him myself at night. He is still smaller than the other pups but has made significant progress in weight gain and growth. He's very healthy and loves his formula.
The formula is right on and I've been supplementing the other pups with it every now and then. We're getting close to where I will be introducing Orijen into their diet in the next day or two.
