I know the group 3 Dog Night took its name from the cold nights in Australia.

We leave our dogs in the car plenty of times(except with the heat) but in the winter here ,we've had no problems. You can put a cotton balnket for them to curl up in but they seem to stay warm just fine.
Angelique, aren't you from Vegas? Where the year round temp is something like 80 degrees !

Right now in South Dakota we are having a heat wave and the high today is............14. Got my shorts out and ready to lay in the sun.
But really, my dogs do well and if it gets below 10 degrees and the wind is up, which more often than not makes the wind chill below zero, I bring them in. They do go out in their kennels (with houses and heat pads) for two hours or so at a time just so that they do not get restless in the house crates. And they are fine in the vehicle crates with wool blankets as well.

I also take my puppy to work but I work the night shift. If the
weather man calls for below zero I usually leave the dog home. It has been my experience that when the weather man says -3 it usually hits -20 in my back yard.
But she dont care how cold it is. When it is below zero I can not get her to come in the house she loves it. I am affraid of some do gooder that knows nothing about dogs calling animal control on me. There is a big difference between a short haired
dog and a two coat shepherd.

it really depends on what your dog is acclimated to. if you keep your dog in the house, he'll be less able to tolerate really low temperatures.
we sometimes visit friends who live in a valley that gets to -50 F in the winter, and they put all their animals out of the house at night, no matter how cold it gets. but when we are down there, if it looks like it might get down to zero overnight, the dog stays home. warmer than that, he can spend the night in the car just fine. it stays pretty warm in the car.

On CSI Las Vegas everybody wears T-shirts and tank tops!
In addition to how cold is too cold, how long is too long? If the temp is just under freezing, how long would you leave a dog in the car? (for example). My dog is a house dog so she doesn't have the really thick fur, she was an outside dog when I got her last winter and there is a big difference in her fur.

just under freezing, you can leave the dog in the car overnight. but during the daytime, if it's sunny out, i would not leave the dog long, and i'd leave a window open. the sun on the car will get it hot in there, even in the winter.

my dogs, if i'd let them, would dive in the pond after breaking through the layer of ice. they love to drink the filthy water, and ruby tried to walk on it once when it was frozen over, it cracked and her feet fell in. she yelped out of shock, but the last couple of times she's tried to dive right in....
i'm convinced they don't feel the cold. they'll roll in the snow, eat it, lay in it, all day long if i'd let them. but they're inside dogs, so they don't spend the night out in it.
however, there are dogs in my neighbourhood that are outside all winter long. one that i know of just has a 50 gallon drum for a home, and another has a proper wooden dog house, but with no door (i'd put a potato sack over it, personally). personally, i feel that it's messed up to leave your dog out in that weather in an open dog house, but these dogs seem to survive okay. course, they're all on chains too.
but as far as my dogs (half shephered, half malamute) go, they're bothered more by the heat than by the cold.
