Maybe try putting a blanket over the crate so that he can't see the cat? That may help.
And don't worry about him not becoming family oriented because of the crate...as soon as he gets used to it he will more than likely start using it on his own as a safe quiet "den" for him to go and lay down in when he needs a little peace and quiet.
But some dogs don't. My dog never used the crate after he was allowed to be let loose while I am at work. Eventually i just put it away because he never used it.
I learned that my pup didn't mind the crate as much if the crate was in the same room as us. I would put her in there for 10-20 min and then out with lots of attention. I even put her in my bedroom at night because she would wake up barking 2-3 times at night. Once she was put in our room, she slept all night until I was ready to take her out in the morning. It only took a few days. I may not have done it exactly right, but it worked for us.
