Marcelo, the total cost for the superior plan is $345 p/year. Either of the plans are definitely worth it, especially in the 1ST year of the pup's life. I was reembursed way more than the $345 that I paid for the insurance in the first year alone. Its a small price for a little peace of mind.
You know one thing you need to be aware of with some of these pet health policies is what happens if the dog gets a chronic condition. I had my dog insured with Pets Health care plan and when the policy is renewed they will consider any condition that was treated in the previous policy year as pre-existing. They also played games with usual and customary as well. The contract stated they would pay 80%, but after they got done playing that game it was more like 50%. They really low-ball there fee schedules.
Personally I think the health insurance is a good idea but you really need to shop around and read the fine print for the policies.
I have had both VPI and Pets Health Care. Pets health care sounds like a better deal with pricing, but IMO its not. VPI is a little pricier but is so much better with their claims. In my females first year, the insurance more than paid for itself. I bought VPI before I even brought her home from the breeder.
How was VPI with chronic conditions? If the dog get's arthritis for example will they continue to cover the meds for that in subsequent renewal years or will they just say oh well it's pre-existing now? That was my biggest complaint with the insurance.
Hi Joel. The problem that comes up after your dog is diagnosed with a chronic problem is that your rates may go up the next year. It really depends on how many claims are filed. But they also go up as your dog ages. As long as the policy is never canceled or lapse most health problems are covered. Genetic problems are rarely covered. VPI was a life saver for me. I probably spent two grand in vet bills the first year of my females life.
The rates going up doesn't bug me. You tend to expect that. What happened with PetsHealthCarePlan is that they considered anything that happened before the policy period to be pre-existing even if you already had a policy. They did pay for my dog to have an MRI and a bunch of eye doctor visits which more than paid for the policy. I probably spent about as much as you did (double-eek) I just don't like this "gee, now we're not going to cover that condition because the policy started over and it's now pre-existing.." Not a good way of doing business.
How was there reimbursement schedule? If they say 80% did they actually cover 80% of your vet costs or was it less than that after doing usual and customary? Just curious, trying to be a good consumer.
