I used the halti (gentle leader, whatever) on my female shepherd years ago but luckily found this site in time for my pup. I was successful at converting the old halti into a rabbit harness
Those things do have their use... just not on dogs.
I went out and bought a muzzle. Works great!!! Works better for the people than the dog!!! All of a sudden he went from a nice friendly lab that everyone to hug to a vicious Rottweiler that will eat your arm for breakfast!!!
What a detterance!!! You still have the people that will try to approach him but once I tell them to stop they usually do (that's usually the point when they notice the muzzle). Thanks for all the advice. I want to get him into training but the only trainers that are local use the "feed them a thousand treats to get them to sit, and prong collars are evil" method of training. I don't want that. Hank needs to be corrected (obviously).
Any suggestions on trainers in the bay area(California)? Thanks again everyone for all your help!!!!

Congratulations on your decision to muzzle him. Now you can walk him with a little more peace of mind .
Don't know of any trainers in that area, hope other Cali folks can help you out there...good luck with that issue.
I just want to commend you for your responsible decision to muzzle this dog AND for being dedicated to this "special needs" dog.
A while ago, a woman (don't recall who--?) posted here on this board about her very very aggressive dog that she worked and worked and he was good--WITH HER. The day came when she had to make a decision about the dog, as she was getting ready to have a baby. She decided to put the dog down, as the only person he could work with *was* her. I think he was eight? when she did this, but man...she had a lot of support in her decision.
I am reminded of her story because of the total dedication, much like yourself taking on a dog like that...offering him a life he would likely not have had in the hands of the average.
Yeah it works really well for him. He is surely not the dog I would have chosen if I was looking for a dog at the time. He kind of chose me. At the time I was looking for a good GSD breeder, but then Hank came along. Which is fine. I wasn't planning on getting a puppy for a few years I was just starting my research.
I love Hank he just has his moments you know?.....
Just kidding. I went and looked at your pics. I figured it out!!!! I figured it was a leerburg.... such great GSDs
Ed's going to have a heart attack if he reads this and I don't correct you...
My photos in photobucket all have titles above the pics. The newest ones (therefore, the pics at the very top of the slideshow) show a title "Leerburg Sig". That only means that those pictures are technologically qualified to be put under my signature in each post (35K or smaller).
Since I'm not a techie, I was afraid that if I didn't title them that, I'd start posting the wrong size pic under my sig and cause difficulty for people with a dial up connection while viewing Leerburg.
So, no, my GSD is not from Leerburg. He is beautiful and thank you for that. He is also (ick, yuck, gag) a showline . He's from German and American lines but a showline nonetheless.
And for what it's worth, he's a outstanding dog in every way. OK, I admit he's not an alligator but I love him anyway .
