Judy I would take the dog to a different vet and have him checked out. There may be no signs on the "outside" but he may be in pain internally.
Do you have law enforcement with K-9's in your area? You could call them and ask what vet they use and take him there. Most vets that work with LE dogs are more agreeable to owners knowing that something is wrong.
Just a suggestion. Please keep us posted.
Carol, funny you say that about law enforcement w/k9s because that's the vet I want to switch to - he handles all the K9's in our county. That's the vet who handled my phone call this morning with professionalism and concern.
And Jennifer - don't even get me started . I absolutely despise the vet tech who answered the phone and treated me that way. I've complained about her twice before to the vet and he said he'd take care of it. Screw this. I'm switching vets.
I'm going to call the new vet again and ask if they can see Gunnar today. You don't think it's a problem to go to a different vet when it involves questions about a procedure that might have gone awry? Or maybe that's exactly why I should go to a different vet?? What do you think?

I've seen plenty of injured from a little to bad act the way you described exactly, all you have to look at is animal planet ..
IMO your dog IS feeling pain somewhere. My long coat when he was neutered was admitted to the emergency after I picked him up from the vet, it went from a $395 surgery to a $2400 surgery. He was bleeding inside after they stiched him up, the area where the stiches are located was like a big sack hanging full of blood, blood was dripping all over. And since I picked him up close to the vet Office closing , I had to rush him later in the evening to a Emergency Clinic. Then to be brought back the next morning to the vet that did the surgery. We no longer use that vet He has recovered since but what a mess it was then.I think Judy for your dog he is feeling maybe the pulling onthe stiches or a some stinging perhaps.Once his stiches ar eremoved , he might be back to normal..I wish your dog a speedy recovery .

I think that going to a diffenent vet is perfectly acceptable given the situation and the way you were treated on the phone by the vet tech. It is exactly what I would do.

Yeesh, your story is awful Angelique and scaring me more . I'm glad you wrote about the animal planet. The more you guys answer me, the more I think it is pain.
Question, I have no appointment for follow up care. They told me to come back in July for vaccinations . Which I'm not going to but, you said the stitches come out?? They don't dissolve? If they get taken out why the hell didn't they tell me to come back for that??

I would consult with another vet as well. I do the same with my kids, if I don't like what I hear from their pediatrician, i get a second opinion from Childrens Hospital.. you do what you have to to get them better, no matter what...Don't let someone make you second guess yourself ever! You are mama, and a gut feeling means a lot! Hope he gets well fast!!
You can also go to the website for the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association to see if there is a holistic vet in your area....

i'd hand that vet tech his head. obviously there IS pain.
it is odd that he's fine when running or playing, but reacts when he's just walking through the house.
dermaxx is an excellent pain killer. we use it for charley horse and muscle pulls . you want to use the lightest pain killer that takes care of the pain. if the dog is in pain, you get something stronger. and you certainly get to the bottom of what is causing the problem.

Judy,
I know that the stories of our experiences may be making you a bit nervous, but I think you will be relieved once you visit the new vet.
I have never had to take a vet back for stitch removal, they are usually dissolvable or I would just remove them myself if there were no issues with the surgery site.
I would definitely say that it is pain related.

That's exactly why I'm so confused and wondering if his behavior is more "emotional" (like trauma related) than physical.
Well, I just made an appt. w/the new vet for 3:45 today.
I'll post back. In the meantime, the video I have is about 2 or 3 seconds long and if I can get my son to help me post it here, I will.

Judy, for mine he had to go back to get the stiches removed but remember he had a second surgery right after the first to stop the bleeding. When our last female we had( years back) got spayed she had to get hers removed too.If your vet is not asking you to come back to get yours removed than yours are the disolvable kind. Nothing to worry about..

I think I actually did this without the help of my teenager! If it's correct, here's the mini, mini video - like 1 to 2 seconds long. When you click the link, it puts you to the video freeze frame of him just at the tail end of him doing the cowering. You then can clearly see how he goes fast into the down position. If you hit Replay a couple of times, you'll see it better.
