so it would be good for me to get her on some high fat/high protein foods to help her pick up weight? would a ground beef with a higher % of fat be good as well as the chicken livers, peanut butter, and cheese? and could some one educate me a little on the need for yogurty. i have read that it is a must and i have read that there is not a need for dairy.
As far as hamburger and liver – they are two different types of meat. Yes, you can feed her hamburger, but also try ground turkey, chicken gizzards, beef hearts, etc. This is your muscle meat and makes up a good portion of her diet. The liver is the organ meat and is only about 5% of her diet. I think if you feed her a well-balanced, weight-appropriate diet, she will fill out nicely. Remember, the percentage of food you feed is the percentage of the weight you want her to eventually be at, not the weight she is at now.
As far as yogurt goes, some feel it helps with digestion, and some feel that it is not necessary at all. Also, it could be an allergic factor for some animals. This is pretty much a do-what-you-want kind of food.
I don't because I feel they are a weight-bearing bone, and therefore, a little too hard for my liking, but I know MANY people here feed them without any problems at all. It's a personal choice kinda thing.
My 2 cents here. Just remember that if you want to feed raw it also doesn't mean veggies, yoghurt and cheese. Dogs in nature are strictly carnivores. Yes, they do scavange but it seems that happens when there's a shortage of food where they hunt. The concept of a "balanced diet" is strictly human as we're omnivores. Like I said dogs are carnivores by nature and they should be fed accordingly IMO. Don't make it more complicated than it is. Meat, bones, fat and organs and one fastig day. I honestly have not seen wolves, dingos, foxes etc have a serving of yoghurt, cheese or veggies .
Forgot. Also groung meat may noy be all that considering that dogs get their teeth cleaned through eating bone and tearing meat and skin. Don't mean to offend anybody.
