A downside of buying online is the companies that have a guarantee on the product usually don't honor the guarantee if the product was bought online. It's not enough reason for me to buy the stuff from the vet, but some people get really concerned about it.
This topic was discussed thoroughly when I worked at a vet clinic. Basically the concern is that the products may or may not be stored within the temperature guidelines and the product may or may not be less effective than properly stored doses. There's no evidence that online purchased medicines are less effective than when purchased from the vet clinic. There IS some history of counterfeit medicines being sold online, so be aware.
If you want to buy online, I'd suggest buying from a trusted source like PetEdge or Drs Fosters & Smith rather than the "others" - you guys know who I'm talking about.
I never thought to ask if they match prices. That is a great idea and I will try it next time I go. I usually buy my items from Foster and Smith because I know they can be trusted. If it is something other than flea or heartworm meds then I buy them from the vet, besides the fact it is probably urgently needed for the health of the dog. Between the flea and heartworm medication I save usually over $30 a year per dog by buying them online.
