i agree with mike. it's an attention-getting device for your dog, she obviously gets something out of the behavior. if it's annoying (which is why i never train any dog to "shake"), you'll need to try to extinguish the behavior or at least minimize it. i would either just ignore it ALL the time &/or do what mike does, give her a different command, give her affection on your terms, not hers.
it really can turn into an absolutely annoying habit.....

my brother in law's dog, whom i "dogsit" quite often has this most annoying behaviour. she'll come up and paw at you, and my old habits of a flick on the snout or pinching the paw actually made the issue *worse*. you'd pinch or flick, and she'd put it right back up again. i've pinched her so hard she sings like a choir and she'll *still* put the paw right back up where it was.
i've found that ignoring her completely, and then asserting myself in other ways (ie: proper pack-leadership behaviours) results in her going away faster. i just hope tolerating a paw on my elbow or knee for five seconds or so isn't undermining my position in the pack.

My stupid lab does this. We grab his paw (without saying anything or looking at him) and hold it until he's squirming and whining to get it back. He thinks twice before pawing again.

Just to rain on the parade of how cute it is (and it is cute).
Consider the dog doing this and putting a run in someone's nylon (notice how politically correct I was by not gender-stereotyping) or scratching the leg of a diabetic with circulation issues.

I agree with Red. A friendly pet dog can injure somebody almost as easily as an aggressive dog. For instance, a sweet, enthusiastic lab mix that nearly jumped onto the lap of a woman with cancer. The woman was so weak, the nurse said it would have killed her - literally. I saw this almost happen.
This is one of those things that will stick with you. I believe that ALL dogs are capable of being very dangerous (mostly because the owners are incompetent).
I don't find anything "cute" about a dog pawing for attention. It ranges from simply attention-getting (bad training) to a dominance behavior (dangerous) "pet me NOW or I'm bite you."
My first dog rule "Don't Touch Me, I'll Touch You."

i'm inclined to agree with you, i was actually contemplating proposing this exact scenario, but my post was getting a bit long and i'm still not confident i know what's going on in my dogs' heads.
tbh i wish the little prick would at least do a half an hour a *week* of OB work with his dog, but you know how teenagers are.

I agree with the "pawing is bad and annoying" folks. My Dobe does it ALL THE TIME (I've known few who didn't for some reason) and it's nothing I taught him. The only attention he recieves for it is me pointing to his bed, and he goes and sulks. He gets plenty of excercise and attention, so he has no excuse. The other day I bent over to pick up a piece of lint on the carpet and he got me good in the arm with his nails, which I had just trimmed. Decidedly not cute. Not a habit to encourage, IMHO.

My dog doesn't paw at me, but somewhere along the way I must have messed up and made him think that barking worked. He is very superstitious about the things he knows (sit, down, etc.) and has been hard for me to train because he wouldn't branch out from the things he knew until the barking started. I saw it as an opportunity to teach him some stupid pet tricks. Now I've got a Jack Russell crawling all over the house trying to get attention, but at least he ain't barkin'=) Maybe showing your dog something new might distract him from pawing you all the time. I can see where it could be unwelcome, but at least he is offering some kind of behavior. Use it to your advantage.

My dog only does this when asked. In the past year I've bought several books on canine behavior. I can't remember where I read this, but I do remember reading that offering a paw is submissive behavior.

Some kind of behavior for sure..hehe . He's a great dog; he learns everything quickly and is pretty respectful all in all. He has a CGC and is working on OB titles, but he's only 10 months old, 90 lbs and made of velcro. Interesting combo . I hadn't thought of teaching him stupid pet tricks....it could be fun. I agree with what most said about it being "attention please" behavior, but it sounds like the other dogs maybe are more gentle than mine? I geuss if your dog is just touching you briefly with a paw it isn't as painful and annoying as getting socked .
