The bitter apple is a good idea. Just make sure you condition your pup to it like Ed describes in the puppy 8 weeks to 8 months DVD.
People often spray the bitter apple on stuff they don't want chewed up and think that's how it works, but it isn't.
The trick is to teach the puppy to HATE the smell of it by soaking a piece of fabric or cotton ball in the solution and then holding the soaked cotton ball in the puppy's mouth for a minute every day (they will put up a fight!).
After a few days, it will only take the slightest odor of bitter apple on an object for your pup to steer WAY clear of it
Yuko is right. I just bought this and tried to do it without the way Ed described and even though he stayed clear at first, sneezing and making funny sounds and movements, he would go right back at it as soon as the bitter apple dried.
Not sure if the bitter apple lasts long even after you do what Ed says. Just doesn't seem like it from what I can smell. Then again, Ed says humans don't smell it as much as dogs. I'll have some family member do the cotton ball thing tomorrow.
OK I know it's been clarified that this dog is a Czech dog, but someone emailed me with a link to this thread asking me whether Yuko's statement of whether showlines are capable of protection work was accurate. I gotta say that, while the majority of showlines suck, you CANNOT rule out every single showline!!! I personally know of 2 showline dogs that work as police dogs with excellent street bite records. A good dog is a good dog and there are good dogs in the showline world. They are few and far between and cost you an arm, a leg and a kidney to buy a good proven adult male showline, but they are out there
