Well, it looks like we may have had a stroke of good luck. I put Konichiwa ( my pup) in the crate while I was sleeping today (for about 4 hours and put the crate in the bathroom. When I woke up he was whining non stop. SO I picked up the crate and he started whining and wagging his little tail. I put it in the living room and Let him out and we went potty ( Konichiwa did, not me, I dont potty in the grass )and Konichiwa kept trying to drink out of the water puddles, so we went in (he was a thirsty little thing and I cant keep water in the crate becasue he will spill it all over while he is fighting to get out) and he WENT IN THE CRATE LOOKING FOR WATER (YAY!) I put food and water in the crate, and we played a game. Konichiwa would go in to get a drink and come out and get praised like there was no tomorrow. He would get excited, go in, get a peice of food and come out to get praised again and kept doing it to get the praise. Looks like things may be promising.... Thank everyone for their encouragement and advise. Konichiwa says thank you also and sends you all a lick lol. One week from today, I am going to try one of those cnavas crates from wal-mart fro a new beginning.
Glad to hear the good news! I don't know how big your pup is going to be, but be careful if he's got more of the shepherd than Spaniel in him...a shepherd could rip through one of those canvas crates. And didn't you say your pup already scratches at the crate?
I would never use a canvas crate for a puppy, no matter what breed. You absolutely do not want to teach a puppy that chewing can get them out of confinement, or destroy material.
There are many adult dogs who can't be in a canvas crate with or without supervision. I was at an agility seminar a couple of months ago, and we had the dogs in crates right next to our chairs and a little 20 pound dog chewed through his canvas crate during the seminar with his owner less than a foot away.

haha I THINK it's mom is cocker spaniel. It is a purebred but we dont know what kind. He looks JUST like her though. We paly games with our dogs, so I think it would be fun for us to play a trainer game. here is a picture of Konichiwa. Now let's have some fun and play Name that Dog Breed lol. http://jonhensley.teamwebb.org/Konichiwa.jpg
P.S. Sorry about the poor quality pic, it was taken with my webcam. Also, I just put Konichiwa in his crate, and he started this "chitter" barking/whining and started attacking the metal bars with his teeth. in the house breaking guide, I beleive I was told the ONLY reason to correct a pup in a crate was when he was biting the bars. so he got a very loud (firm, not screaming) "No!"and then praise when he laid down 5 min later. right now my baby is laying asleep in the crate. I will attempt to take another pic and post it.

YAY! He has been being fed in the crate for 2 days, I took ed's advise and tossed 3-4 doggy buscuits in the crate and earlier this evening he whined for 10 minutes, and then went to sleep for 3 hours. I woke him up, took him potty, fed him in the crate, and let him play, and then went potty again. I tossed the doggy treats in again and said crate as he went in and he whined for about 30 seconds and then went to sleep. Thank you everyone.
