Hi Rick
Well I fully understand the scenario you are trying to accomplished . And nature will always call your dog to leave your daughter to come to your aid.I have seen it , and unless you shut your daughters room(that she happens to be in)and your dog is with her he will guard and protect her BUT if he can get to you and help you he will leave her and come to help you, that is what they would do naturally( in the pack) and it is a very hard instinct to break. In a training scenario you might get the exercise accomplished but when it is "real" in your home it is a huge difference, night and day in a dogs behavior.Training scenarios and real scenarios are soo different, natural instinct will win.I've seen it...As far as your daughter with him in a back yard or front yard for that matter, guarding her is an easy accomplishment that will hold but when you are asking your dog to stay with your daughter and leave you to the fight is a very hard thing for your dog to allow if he can get to the fight and help..
I agree w/Angelique. It's a very very hard command to train just because of the dogs instinct to help you also. It's kind of like, a family member getting beat to a pulp in front of you. They tell you not to intefere, but if you see they are in a life or death situation, and you can help, will you help?
Thanks guys this is also the answer i got from Blackwater, so we will work really hard on the guard command to try to perfect it, and if anything every happens in real life we will let nature take over on this case but thanks to everyone for the interest.
Hey Rick if you don't mind, let us know the steps in the training. I found this to be very interesting, but hard to accomplish. Let us know though how things progress!
Rick, I sure hope we do get together, I need to hear and compare notes on your training one of these days I think we'll have to start diner very early cause we'll be chatting about dogs till closing, and in Vegas closing is very very late .So much to talk about !!
Thanks Angelique! I took your advice and we've been working really hard on recall. That was a day we started w/level 10 distractions. I had just called her to me from a sit (little one w/red collar) and she ran hard & fast to me. She is doing great. Thanks!
