I was fascinated by the dynamic of, for lack of a better phrase, the "eating hierarchy". As I understood it, it was beholden on him to eat the select parts of the carcass (liver, heart etc) and failure to do so on his part could have led to the wolves doubting his legitimacy to alpha status. And that they would have come to know he didnt eat the good stuff by the abscence of the smell.
I was slightly on edge the whole show for fear that the wolves might, in the course of normal pack conflict, tear his throat out. Glad that didnt happen, as it might have increased fear of wolves when clearly his goal is to diminsh fear of them.

Sacrifice smackrifice. What's more important family (people that you can have intimate relationships with that create growth in each other) or a pack of wolves. If you can't judge something like that then you can't tell anybody anything (oh I forgot everythings relative). I don't judge him, just his actions according to the way it was stated. It's a good thing what he's doing, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Of course not much detail was given and when it comes to believing the media about anything you better think again.

Tell you the truth, the guy ain't no Farley Mowatt. I loved Farley's book (Never Cry Wolf), though the movie made from the book was pretty hokey.
I love his books, too, and that was my favorite.

I'm not going to hijack this thread by bringing nothing positive to it (such as where are his family priorities), who are you to judge what should be important to what person!!!!!!!!!!! The guy did research to benefit all who choose to want to learn about wolf behavior. The fact that he choose his wolves over his family is NONE ~ YA and irrelevant.

Thats the whole point Joe, doing "research" in a zoo is meaningless and the eating prime parts of the meat was goofy too, all that snarling and silly crap, just bringing the food in the enclosure to eat would seem to be enough to let them know who's who, it's the only thing they know. After thinking about it a little more i almost feel sorry for the guy,

Your right it really isn't my business but when they announce it to the whole world they kind of make it that way themselves. My original post said " I don't even know why they put that in there". I'll skip the name calling.

IMO, I don't think that doing research in a zoo is meaningless at all when it comes to wolves to reptiles. I mean watching behavior aspects of wolves or breeding behaviors of lizards and snakes there is allot to be learned from doing research within a zoo.
The snarling, pack behavior, he acted like they act towards to each other. The pack leaders get to eat first, they eat the best parts of the kill. IMO, he acted like he was a wolf, and since it was uncharted territory and he successfully played a dominant roll and a submissive roll; it was just unorthodox from what the average researcher or person would commit themselves to doing.

This question is more human medical related. The reason I ask is so many people don't allow their kids to be licked by their dogs but maybe there is some advantages to kids being exposed to dog germs. Anyone think his statement about his immune system had any validity to it?
He also claimed the wolves pulled out his stitches and licked the wounds and said it healed his wounds quicker. I think I read someplace that if a dog licked poison oak on a person it would heal it.
