Thats right. I would, however, tend to look at yoghurt as a cure rather than a staple. Like Shandar was saying, if your dog is throwing up yellow bile etc.. I doubt very much that anybody, who feeds their dogs as well as it sounds like most people on this board do, will have to use it very often. If your feeding your dogs well, chances are they're not going to have any problems with indigestion.
Most adult dogs lack the ability to produce the enzymes necessary to digest lactose (the sugar in milk). If lactose is fed to these dogs you will get loose stools, gas, and a general discomfort from both. If dogs are fed dairy products from weaning on, they will continue to produce the enzymes necessary to digest lactose.
When you culture milk with bacteria (to make cheese, yogurt, etc.) the first component of milk that the bacteria digest is the lactose.
The GI tract is a place of constant battle between different bacteria for a place to live, in order to change/correct the flora in the GI tract very large numbers of bacteria would have to be introduced, these levels are not typically found in a serving of yogurt.
I use a bacterial supplement pill for people on Auster after she has had antibiotics. I just buy a bottle at Walmart and keep it in the fridge. She will get the supplement at other times as well (can't hurt, might help).

Well, I checked (sorry, it's one of those things that's hard to spell when you are tired) and it is called acidophilus (and several other things, but all the bottles I have seen mention acidophilus somewhere on the label). However, I might start buying something other than the Wal-mart brand since I became curious and found an article that states that viability can vary widely (http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/2C1C2.htm).
